Kärnan
Kärnan (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈɕæːˈɳan]; Danish: Kernen, both literally The Core) is a medieval tower in Helsingborg, Scania, in southern Sweden. It is the only part remaining of a larger Danish fortress which, along with the fortress Kronborg on the opposite of Oresund, controlled the entranceway between Kattegat and Øresund and further south the Baltic Sea.
History
The origins of the Helsingborg fortress is disputed but Danish legend places its origin to the reign of the legendary King Fróði. However, this legend has not been supported by archaeological proof. Dendrochronological dating has shown that the core was built in the 1310s, when Eric VI of Denmark was King of Denmark. It was considered the most important fortress in Denmark, and was integral in securing control over the strait between Scania and Zealand.
It was surrendered to Sweden along with the rest of Skåneland as part of the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. The fortress was retaken by Danish forces in 1676 during the Scanian War, and its capture celebrated by flying a giant Flag of Denmark above it. This flag was later captured by the Swedish army and is preserved in the Army Museum (Armémuseum) in Stockholm. The fortress returned to Swedish control by the Treaty of Lund in 1679. Charles XI of Sweden ordered most of it demolished fearing that it was too exposed to a sneak attack from Denmark. The only thing that was saved for posterity was the old medieval tower core. The tower continued to serve as a landmark for shipping through Øresund.
Kärnan (roller coaster)
Kärnan (also known as Oath of Kärnan ("Schwur des Kärnan")) is a steel roller coaster at Hansa Park, located in Sierksdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Manufactured by Gerstlauer, the roller coaster is both the only full-circuit hypercoaster with inversions in Europe, as well as the second tallest roller coaster in Europe. It is also the first roller coaster ever to have a "reverse freefall" drop on the lift hill.
History
Kärnan was first announced by Hansa Park in November 2013, following an extensive planning and development stage. Gerstlauer were chosen to manufacture the coaster, Kärnan being their first installation over 200-foot (61 m) in height. It will also be the third consecutive Gerstlauer coaster to feature in the park, following Fluch von Novgorod and Die Schlange von Midgard.
Construction began on the tower element that will house the vertical lift hill in April 2014, with the tower itself being topped off in September 2014. Hansa Park confirmed that the coaster will feature a dark ride section with an inversion. Kärnan also has a 30-meter vertical reverse freefall drop during the vertical lift, a world first on a full-circuit roller coaster.
