Lionel Richie

Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. (born June 20, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and actor. Beginning in 1968, he was a member of the musical group Commodores signed to Motown Records. Richie made his solo debut in 1982 with the album Lionel Richie and the number-one hit "Truly". He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.

Early life

Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, the son of Alberta R. (Foster) and Lionel Brockman Richie, Sr. He grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute.

Richie graduated from Joliet Township High School, East Campus. A star tennis player in Joliet, he accepted a tennis scholarship to attend Tuskegee Institute, and dropped out of Tuskegee Institute after his sophomore year. Richie seriously considered studying divinity to becoming a priest with the Episcopal Church, but ultimately decided he was not "priest material" and decided to continue his musical career. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi and an active life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Lionel Richie (album)

Lionel Richie is the debut solo album by R&B singer Lionel Richie. It was recorded and released while Richie was still a member of the Commodores. He would leave the group shortly after. It was released in 1982 on Motown Records. The first single, "Truly", topped the Billboard Hot 100. Follow-up single "You Are" reached number four, and "My Love" reached number five. The album was also a hit, reaching number one on the Cashbox albums chart on December 11, 1982.

In 2003, Lionel Richie was re-released as part of a remaster series that saw two additional tracks added to the overall package. A solo version of "Endless Love" and an instrumental version of "You Are" now round out the CD.

As well as featuring English musician Thomas Dolby on synthesizers, Joe Walsh provided the guitar solo for the song "Wandering Stranger". It was his first album appearance since playing all tracks on John Entwistle's fifth solo album, Too Late the Hero.

In a Season 3 episode of Friends, Chandler is seen holding a copy of this album and singing "Endless Love". The song was not a part of this release; however, the song now appears on the 2003 remastered edition as one of two bonus tracks (as a solo performance only). At the time, "Endless Love" was available only on the original soundtrack to the movie of the same name, Endless Love, starring Brooke Shields.

Just for You (Lionel Richie album)

Just for You is Lionel Richie's seventh solo album, which was released in March 2004 in the United Kingdom, with the US release in May of that year. Released shortly after Richie's divorce from his second wife, the album featured Richie in collaboration with singers and musicians from different backgrounds. It received mixed reviews, with much of the criticism targeted at the album's lyrics. It sold 207,000 copies and peaked at #22 on the American Billboard 200.

Background

Just for You was the seventh studio album of Lionel Richie. Richie, previously a member of The Commodores, had become a solo artist in the early 1980s. With the release of Can't Slow Down in 1983, he became one of the biggest solo acts in the country before leaving the industry in 1987. He began working towards a comeback in the late 1990s but saw little success.

Following the release of his hit compilation album The Definitive Collection in 2003 and his daughter Nicole's appearance in The Simple Life, Richie returned to public attention. Shortly before producing Just for You Richie and his wife, Diane, were divorced; the separation was bitter and very public.

Just for You (song)

"Just for You" is the fifteenth overall single from British band M People. It is the lead single from their fourth album, Fresco (1997). Written by Mike Pickering, Paul Heard and Heather Small. Produced by M People. It was released on 22 September 1997. The song peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart.

Composition

The intro to the song is led by an orchestral string movement, soon combined with a slow strummy guitar and Heather's vocals.

"Just for You" is a love song with Heather singing about the exultations of love and the lengths that she would go to always be there; to support, to sacrifice and to guide singing the insistent refrain at the end of every line of the verses: "Just for You".

Promotion

The video was premiered on Friday 12 September 1997 on music channel The Box, a music show called Good Stuff on 23 September and Videotech on ITV on 25 September.

The band themselves first performed the song live on Chris Evans's Channel 4 show TFI Friday on Friday 19 September and GMTV on the day of release. They also made their fourteenth promotional appearance on Top of the Pops on Friday 26 September and the video was played in full on The Chart Show the next day.

Just for You (film)

Just for You is a 1952 musical film starring Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman and the final motion picture to be directed by Elliott Nugent. It was nominated for two Academy Awards in 1953. The film was based on the book "Famous" by Stephen Vincent Benét. Filming took place between October 22 and December 20. 1951. It is said that Judy Garland had originally been sent a script as she was being considered for the female lead, but she apparently decided not to proceed with the project. Location scenes were filmed at Lake Arrowhead, near San Bernardino, California and at Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Plot

Widower Jordan Blake (Bing Crosby) is a successful Broadway producer and songwriter, but he has been neglecting his teenaged children, Jerry (Robert Arthur) and Barbara (Natalie Wood).

In rehearsal with star and girlfriend Carolina Hill (Jane Wyman), he keeps Jerry waiting, then dismisses a song his son has written as trite. Jordan is also unaware that Jerry is hopelessly in love with Carolina, who has wedding plans of her own...but to Jordan.
