A pennon or pennant is a flag that is larger at the hoist than at the fly. It can have several shapes, like triangular, tapering or triangular swallow-tailed.
It was one of the principal three varieties of flags carried during the Middle Ages (the other two were the banner and the standard).Pennoncells and streamers or pendants are minor varieties of this style of flag. The pennon is a flag resembling the guidon in shape, but only half the size. It does not contain any coat of arms, but only crests, mottos and heraldic and ornamental devices.
Pennon comes from the Latin penna meaning "a wing" or "a feather".
The pennon was sometimes pointed, but more generally forked or swallow-tailed at the end. In the 11th century, the pennon was generally square, one end being decorated with the addition of pointed tongues or streamers, somewhat similar to the oriflamme. During the reign of Henry III, the pennon acquired the distinctive swallow-tail, or the single-pointed shape. Another version of the single-pointed pennon was introduced in the 13th century. In shape this was a scalene triangle, obtained by cutting diagonally the vertically oblong banner.
The streamer (Anticlea derivata) is a moth of the family Geometridae. It is found in Europe, North Africa and Asia up to the Altai Mountains.
The wingspan is 30–34 mm. The ground colour, is light brown or light grey or pink tints predominate. A narrow, dark lateral band is located near the base of the forewings. The basal region is limited by a slightly curved, blackish transverse band. A large dark triangle costal patch which becomes a jagged line is getting thinner towards the inner edge is an unmistakable pattern. The hindwings are brown-grey and show a faint cross line.
The moth flies from March to May depending on the location.
The larvae feed on Rose species.
Streamer is a radiative transfer code (Key and Schweiger, 1988) to calculate radiances (intensities) or irradiances in the atmosphere.
The code uses N-stream approximation to the radiative transfer equations (Stamnes et al. 1988) and allows for flexible choice of bands. The code can be used both for satellite radiance applications and estimates of heating rates in both cloudy and non-cloudy atmosphere. One can specify surface reflectivity. Streamer is written in FORTRAN.
FluxNet, the neural network version of Streamer, calculates upwelling and downwelling surface flux in either shortwave or longwave. It is less flexible than Streamer but is two to four times faster.
