Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act (Public Law 103-433), it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the park. It covers a land area of 790,636 acres (1,235.37 sq mi; 3,199.59 km²) – an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. A large part of the park, some 429,690 acres (173,890 ha), is a designated wilderness area. Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.

History

The park was initially created as a National Monument on 10 August 1936, containing 825,000 acres (334,000 ha), after Minerva Hoyt led activism aimed at persuading the state and federal governments at protecting the area. The park was elevated to a National Park on 31 October 1994 by the Desert Protection Act, which also added 234,000 acres to the park.

National parks and nature reserves of Israel

National parks of Israel are declared historic sites or nature reserves, which are mostly operated and maintained by the National Nature and Parks Authority. As of 2005, Israel maintains more than 150 nature reserves that protect 2,500 species of indigenous wild plants, 20 species of fish, 400 species of birds and 70 species of mammals.

Some parks are located at archaeological sites such as Tel Megiddo, Beit She'an, Ashkelon and Kursi. Others, such as the Alexander stream, Mount Carmel National Park or Hurshat Tal focus on nature and the preservation of local flora and fauna. Several parks and nature reserves have camping options, such as tent grounds and bungalows, open to small groups and individual campers. Some of them are located in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights and the West Bank.

In 2011, the most popular national parks were Yarkon National Park, Caesarea, Ein Gedi and Tel Dan.

History

During the 19th century, the region was sparsely populated, with a population between 275,000 and 475,000. Waves of immigration expanded local population needs. Forests were cut down to supply coal for heating, industry and the Turkish railway. The German Templars brought with them shotguns, quickly adopted by local peasants. The First World War was characterized by massive acquisition of firearms. By the early 20th century, hunting threatened the extinction of crocodiles, Arabian ostriches, deers, fallow deers, Syrian brown bears, onagers, Asiatic lions and Asiatic cheetahs.

National Park (band)

National Park are a Scottish band formed in 1997 in Glasgow. The band's music has been described as having some similarities to Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500 and Yo La Tengo "without sounding like anything else."

History

The band was formed by former Telstar Ponies member John Hogarty and Scott Walker. In August 1997, the band played their first gig. Simon Shaw and Michael McGaughrin of the band V-Twin joined Hogarty and Walker, and played the bass and drums, respectively.

National Park's first single, "Great Western", was a 10" released on Earworm records; a ten-minute-long improvisation. It was recorded on a tape deck at an early rehearsal session. Despite the length of the track it was playlisted on Xfm London. Hogarty was also part of the Phantom Engineer project with David Keenan and Bill Wells. Collaborations with Future Pilot A.K.A. then followed, and were released on Beggars Banquet Records and also on Earworm records. The band also played live with many of their favourite bands, including Belle and Sebastian at the Shepherds Bush Empire.

Boundary Field

Boundary Field is a former baseball ground located in Washington, D.C. located on a larger block bounded approximately by Georgia Avenue, 5th Street, W Street and Florida Avenue, NW. It was just outside what was then the city limit of Washington, whose northern boundary was Boundary Street (later renamed Florida Avenue).

The ground was home to the Washington Senators of the American Association in 1891 and then of the National League from 1892 to 1899 after the League absorbed the Association. The League contracted after the 1899 season and the Senators folded.

From 1891 to 1893, the field was the venue for home games of the Georgetown Hoyas football program.

The field was also called National Park as the home of the American League's Washington Nationals from 1903 to 1911. When the American League declared itself a major league and began raiding National League rosters for talent, the National League decided to retain its lease on the Boundary Field property. This forced the Nationals to find a new home, and they settled upon a field with the prosaic name American League Park.

Jonathan Messer

Jonathan Messer (born 17 March 1973 in Melbourne) is an Australian director of theatre and film.

Career

Jonathan Messer works as an Australian director of film, and theatre. He directed the theatre production Tejas Verdes by Fermin Cabal in 2006 with Red Stitch Actors Theatre following the successful run of Vincent in Brixton by Nicholas Wright in 2005.

In 2005 Messer went to New York where he was invited to The Sloan Film Summit at the Tribeca Film Institute, where he screened his short film Joshua Tree starring Taylor Dayne. Jonathan also worked as the Assistant Director to Jim Sharman in the production of Three Furies at the Sydney Opera House. He has also directed and co-produced music videos for the bands Tiltmeter, Nokturnal and 67 Special.

Messer trained in Los Angeles for three years, and developed his film making skills and experience studying film direction at the American Film Institute He then worked as production assistant for the Kennedy-Marshall Company producing feature films such as Seabiscuit and The Bourne Supremacy. Before graduation from the MFA program in directing at the American Film Institute (AFI) in 2002, Messer underwent an internship at Killer Films in New York, working in pre-production on the Todd Haynes film Far From Heaven. Messer also received a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (Australia) and an Ian Potter Foundation Grant to pursue his MFA at the AFI.

Joshua Tree (horse)

Joshua Tree (Foaled March 8, 2007) is an Irish thoroughbred stallion, bred by Castlemartin Stud And Skymarc Farm. He is sired by Montjeu. He is a four time Group 1 winner, having earned £2.4m ($3.8m) in his racing career. Joshua Tree is the only horse to have ever won the Gr.1 Pattison Canadian International Stakes three times: in 2010, 2012 and 2013. With only four other horses having won it twice. Joshua also won the Gr. 2 Royal Lodge in Ascot at the age of two, the Gr. 2 Prix Kergorlay in Deauville, the Gr. 1 International Invitational cup in Qatar, and the Irish Stallion Farms maiden stakes in Ireland. He came second in the Gr. 1 Canadian International in 2011, Second in the Gr. 2 Princess of Wales's stakes in Newmarket, second in the Gr. 2 Prix Kergorlay in Deauville and second in the gr. 3 Dubai Gold Cup. Joshua Tree is owned by K Nabooda and K Albahou. He stands at Stud in France.

Racing career

Joshua Tree ranks fourth on the list of earners sired by Montjeu, behind St Nicholas Abbey, Green Moon and Hurricane Run.

Joseph F. Girzone

Joseph Francis Girzone (May 15, 1930 – November 29, 2015), sometimes known as the "Joshua Priest", was an American Catholic priest and writer, most notably as the author of the Joshua series of novels.

Life

Early life

Girzone was born in Albany, New York, to Peter, a butcher, and Margaret Girzone, the oldest of their twelve children. It was a struggling family, which experienced the shame of eviction during his childhood.<ref name=TU2 /

Girzone entered the Carmelite Order as a young man and was ordained as a priest in 1955. A few years later he chose to leave the order in favor of life as a secular priest and was accepted by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. He then served at various parishes of the diocese, in the course of which he became active in advocating for the elderly. He was a driving force in the formation of the Office for the Aging of Montgomery County.<ref name=TU /

In 1981, however, Girzone was diagnosed with a heart condition which was judged to be fatal, leading him to retire from active ministry.<ref name=girzone-site / He accepted the forfeiture of any pension or medical benefits from the diocese as part of an agreement for his early retirement.<ref name=NCR /
