Jonathan Lewis (motorsport)

Jonathan Lewis resides in Attleborough, Norfolk. Well known for his long career in motorsport management where during the 1980s he was the championship winning works Van Diemen FF1600 Formula Ford team boss, Lewis has made regular appearances on television throughout his career including a spot on BBC2 Top Gear motoring programme where he ran presenter Richard Hammond in a Comtec Racing Formula Renault racing car then later a Renault R25 Formula One racing car.

Jonathan’s early career on the Yorkshire grass tracks set him on course to winning the National Mini Se7en Championship at the age of 19, as well as stints with the Monoposto Racing Club. After climbing out of the cockpit and into team management he headed the all-conquering works Van Diemen Formula Ford team before forming Comtec Racing. In 2006 headed by Lewis Comtec Racing won the World Series by Renault Championship, with driver Alx Danielsson. Since the works Van Diemen FF1600 racing team dissolved, as new team owner Lewis took responsibility for the newly christened Comtec Racing operation with partner Pierre Moncheur and had ex Formula One driver Martin Donnelly as Driver Development Manager amongst his other staff.

Jonathan Lewis (artist)

Jonathan Lewis (born 1970) lives and works in London, UK. He makes photo-based art that explores themes of production and consumption via the elemental properties of the pixel. His subjects, ranging from candy wrappers and cigarettes to haute couture and famous works of art reflect an uncritical fascination for the artificial and the man-made. His process, often pixelating images beyond recognition, criss crosses the border between figuration and abstraction, and his work takes the form of digital prints, sculpture, video and books. He is a founding member of the ABC Artists' Books Cooperative.

His work has been exhibited internationally and he is represented by Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York, USA. His work was included in 'Signs of a Struggle: Photography in the Wake of Postmodernism' at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK in 2011, and was featured in a two-person show, 'Mosaico', with the American photographer John Pfahl at Nina Freudenheim Gallery, Buffalo, USA in 2012.

Jonathan Lewis (cricketer)

Jonathan James Benjamin Lewis (born 21 May 1970, Isleworth, Middlesex, England) is a former English cricketer.

He represented Essex (1990-1996; Cap 1995) and Durham (1997-2006, Captain 2001-2004) as a right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm medium fast bowler in 205 first-class matches. He scored 10,281 runs at an average of 31.92 with a highest score of 210. He scored 16 hundreds and 66 fifties.

He should not be confused with the former England international and Sussex CCC player Jonathan 'Jon' Lewis (born 1975).

He attended King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, Essex.

Coaching

Lewis was appointed second team coach by Durham CCC. In June 2013 first team coach Geoff Cook suffered a heart attack and Lewis deputised, helping Durham to their third County Championship title win. Lewis was appointed first team coach on a full-time basis in December 2013.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (Middlesex cricketer)

Lewis (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who was associated with Middlesex and made his first-class debut in 1830.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
