John Wetzel

John Francis Wetzel (born October 22, 1944) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. A 6'5" guard, he played collegiately at Virginia Tech and was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 8th round of the 1966 NBA Draft. Over a seven-year career, Wetzel played for three teams: the Lakers, the Phoenix Suns, and the Atlanta Hawks. He later coached the Suns during the 1987-88 NBA season. He served as an assistant for several other teams, retiring from basketball in 2004. Wetzel currently splits time in Tucson, Arizona and Maui, Hawaii.

Professional career

2013 NFL Combine

Oakland Raiders

On April 29, 2013, Wetzel was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Oakland Raiders. On August 20, he was waived/injured by the Raiders. On the next day, he cleared waivers and was placed on the injured reserve list. On August 24, he was waived from the team with an injury settlement.

Dallas Cowboys

On November 12, 2013, he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys to the practice squad. On September 5, 2015, he was waived by the Cowboys. On September 7, 2015, he was signed to the Cowboys' practice squad after clearing waivers. On November 12, he was released.

Indianapolis Colts

On November 24, 2015, Wetzel signed with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. He was released on December 1.

Arizona Cardinals

John Wetzel (Pennsylvania)

John Wetzel is the current Pennsylvania Secretary of Corrections, having been nominated by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and confirmed in May 2011. He was subsequently re-nominated by Governor Tom Wolf in 2015. Previously, he served on the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons.
