John Turner

John Napier Wyndham Turner, PC, CC, QC (born June 7, 1929) is an English born Canadian lawyer and politician, who served as the 17th Prime Minister of Canada from June 30 to September 17, 1984.

In his political career, Turner held several prominent Cabinet posts, including minister of justice and minister of finance, under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau from 1968 to 1975. Amid a world recession and the prospect of having to implement the unpopular wage and price controls, Turner surprisingly resigned his position in 1975. After a hiatus from politics from 1975 to 1984, Turner returned and successfully contested the Liberal leadership. Turner held the office of prime minister for 79 days (the second shortest tenure in Canadian history after Sir Charles Tupper), as he advised the Governor General to dissolve parliament immediately after being sworn in as prime minister, and went on to lose the 1984 election in a landslide. Turner stayed on as Liberal leader and headed the Official Opposition for the next six years, leading his party to a modest recovery in the 1988 campaign; he resigned as Liberal leader in 1990 and stepped down as an MP at the 1993 election. Turner was Canada's first prime minister born in the United Kingdom since Mackenzie Bowell in 1896.

John Turner (fur trapper)

John Turner (1807 – 1847) was an American fur trapper and guide who first entered Oregon Country in 1828 and became an early resident of the Willamette Valley. Later he moved to California where he was part of the second attempt to rescue the Donner Party.

Early life

Turner was born in Madison County, Kentucky in the year 1807 to parents Smithton Turner and Nancy Ragsdale. By 1823 he was working in the fur trade in the Rocky Mountains.

Mojave and Umpqua Massacres

At the 1827 rendezvous on the southern shore of Bear Lake, Jedediah Smith assembled a party of 18 fur trappers and two Native American women to accompany him on a return trip to California. Turner joined the group, and they headed southwest, essentially retracing Smith's route the year before. While Smith's party crossed the Colorado River at the 35th parallel, a hostile group of Mohave attacked, killing ten trappers and capturing the two women. The surviving men, including Smith and Turner, eventually met up with the group that had previously traveled with Smith to California, and after many additional setbacks, a party of 18 continued north into the Oregon Country, being joined along the way by an Indian boy they called Marion.

John Turner (Australian politician)

John Harcourt Turner (born 22 April 1949), was deputy leader of the National Party in New South Wales from 1999 to 2003 and a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Myall Lakes between 1988 and 2011 for the National Party of Australia.

He was educated at Aberdare Primary School and Sydney Grammar School. He received a Diploma of Law and practiced as a solicitor and tax agent before entering Parliament. Since entering Parliament he has received a Bachelor of Letters from Deakin University and a Bachelor of Arts from Murdoch University.
