John Tavares

John Tavares may refer to:

  • John Tavares (ice hockey) (born 1990), Canadian ice hockey player for the New York Islanders
  • John Tavares (lacrosse) (born 1968), Canadian lacrosse player for the Buffalo Bandits
  • John Tavares (ice hockey)

John Tavares (born September 20, 1990) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who currently serves as the captain of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected first overall by the Islanders in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Previously, Tavares competed at the major junior level as a member of the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before being traded to the London Knights at the 2009 OHL trading deadline along with Michael Del Zotto. Tavares broke into the OHL after gaining "exceptional player" status at the age of 14, allowing the Generals to select him in the OHL Priority Draft as an underage player in 2005. Tavares was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Rookie of the Year in 2006 and CHL Player of the Year in 2007. In 2009, he finished the season with a career total of 215 goals, breaking Peter Lee's OHL record by two.

Tavares was the focus of an unsuccessful push to have the NHL's draft rules changed to allow him to participate in the 2008 Entry Draft, as well as an attempt to allow him to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a 17-year-old in 2007. Tavares was ranked as the top prospect for the 2009 Draft by both the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and International Scouting Services.

    Famous quotes by John Tavares:

"Any player in the NHL would be a great comparison, but when you name a guy like Sidney Crosby . . . but I don't know if I'll be able to do things he's done in the league because we're different types of players,"
"There's obviously going to be attention since I'm the youngest guy in the league and the first guy allowed in under the exceptional player rule, ... I don't go into games thinking about the pressure, that everyone is watching."
"We're trying to bid for the Memorial Cup when it comes back to the OHL and we're getting a new arena, ... It will be a long time, but I think it will be a great experience too."
"My first learning curve was right here in this game, ... My first three games, I thought I played excellent. I'm going to have to get over this one and look forward to the next games coming up."
"Guys are a lot stronger on faceoffs and that's something I've got to work on,"
"I've been able to handle the pace, ... I've got four goals in four games so I feel pretty good. Obviously today wasn't a great day, but hopefully I can come back next week and have a good one."
"Me and (Generals GM Brad) Selwood will obviously talk about that next summer and see how it goes, ... I'd obviously like to keep going in lacrosse, but if I have to drop it, it's going to happen sooner or later. When I have to do it, I have to do it."
"They're a hot team and the defending champions. So we have a lot to prove."
"I think we need a road game to kind of find ourselves a bit."
"Maybe we're a little complacent at home right now. At the beginning of the season we tried to raise the bar, but here we are again, two straight home losses. I think the road is going to help us out."
