John Tate

John Torrence Tate, Jr. (born March 13, 1925) is an American mathematician, distinguished for many fundamental contributions in algebraic number theory, arithmetic geometry and related areas in algebraic geometry. He is professor emeritus at Harvard University. He was awarded the Abel Prize in 2010.

Biography

Tate was born in Minneapolis. His father, John Tate Sr., was a professor of physics at the University of Minnesota, and a longtime editor of Physical Review. His mother, Lois Beatrice Fossler, was a high school English teacher. Tate Jr. received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University, and entered the doctoral program in physics at Princeton University. He later transferred to the mathematics department and received his PhD in 1950 as a student of Emil Artin. Tate taught at Harvard for 36 years before joining the University of Texas in 1990. He retired from the Texas mathematics department in 2009, and returned to Harvard as a professor emeritus. He currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his wife Carol. He has three daughters with his first wife Karin Tate.

John Tate (footballer)

John Anthony Tate (6 December 1892 – 1973) was an English professional footballer who played for West Stanley and Tottenham Hotspur.

Football career

Tate began his career at Non league club West Stanley. The goalkeeper joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1913 and played four matches for the Lilywhites before re-joining West Stanley.

Sir John Tate (died 1515) of the City of London, was twice Lord Mayor of London in 1496/7 and 1514, and was twice Member of Parliament for the City of London, in 1504 and 1510.

John ("Johnny") Tate (January 29, 1955 in Marion, Arkansas – April 9, 1998 in Knoxville, Tennessee) was an American prizefighter and Olympic boxer, who held the World Boxing Association version of the World Heavyweight Championship from October 1979 to March 1980, losing the title in his first defence.

Amateur career

"Big John" Tate (named due to his 6'4" height) captured a bronze medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, losing to Olympic boxing legend Teófilo Stevenson.

Olympic results

Tate lost in the finals of the 1975 National Golden Gloves to Emory Chapman. He lost in the quarterfinals the next year in a split decision to Michael Dokes. He avenged his loss to Dokes in the Olympic Trials by decision, and beat 1976 National AAU Champion Marvin Stinson to advance to the Olympic team.He also beat future heavyweight champion Greg Page by 2 close decisions, one in the quarterfinals of the 1975 National Golden Gloves tournament.

John Tate (Australian politician)

John Percival Tate (1895 – 21 January 1977) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician. Born in Wellington, he was educated in New Zealand before becoming an architect. Having migrated to Australia, he became a construction manager with the Allied Works Council in New South Wales 1940-1945. He served on Ryde Municipal Council, Sydney City Council and Cumberland County Council. In 1949, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a Liberal Senator for New South Wales. He held the seat until his retirement in 1953. Tate died in 1977.

Tate

The Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British art, and international modern and contemporary art. It is a network of four art museums: Tate Britain, London (until 2000 known as the Tate Gallery, founded 1897), Tate Liverpool (founded 1988), Tate St Ives, Cornwall (founded 1993) and Tate Modern, London (founded 2000), with a complementary website, Tate Online (created 1998). Tate is not a government institution, but its main sponsor is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Tate is used as the operating name for the corporate body, which was established by the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 as The Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery.

The gallery was founded in 1897, as the National Gallery of British Art. When its role was changed to include the national collection of modern art as well as the national collection of British art, in 1932, it was renamed the Tate Gallery after sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate & Lyle, who had laid the foundations for the collection. The Tate Gallery was housed in the current building occupied by Tate Britain, which is situated in Millbank, London. In 2000, the Tate Gallery transformed itself into the current-day Tate, or the Tate Modern, which consists of a federation of four museums: Tate Britain, which displays the collection of British art from 1500 to the present day; Tate Modern, which is also in London, houses the Tate's collection of British and international modern and contemporary art from 1900 to the present day. Tate Liverpool has the same purpose as Tate Modern but on a smaller scale, and Tate St Ives displays modern and contemporary art by artists who have connections with the area. All four museums share the Tate Collection. One of the Tate's most publicised art events is the awarding of the annual Turner Prize, which takes place at Tate Britain.
