John McPhee

John Angus McPhee (born March 8, 1931) is an American writer, widely considered one of the pioneers of creative nonfiction. He is a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the category General Nonfiction and he won that award on the fourth occasion in 1999 for Annals of the Former World (a collection of five books including two of his previous Pulitzer finalists). In 2008 he received the George Polk Career Award for his "indelible mark on American journalism during his nearly half-century career."

Since 1974, McPhee has been the Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University.

McPhee has lived in Princeton, New Jersey, for most of his life. He was born in Princeton, the son of the Princeton University athletic department's physician, Dr. Harry McPhee. John was educated at Princeton High School, then spent a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy, before graduating from Princeton University in 1953, and spending a year at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.

Bid McPhee

John Alexander "Bid" McPhee (November 1, 1859 – January 3, 1943) was an American 19th-century Major League Baseball second baseman. He played 18 seasons in the majors, from 1882 until 1899, all for the Cincinnati Reds franchise. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. Known more for his fielding than his hitting, McPhee was the last second baseman to play without a glove.

Early career

Born in Massena, New York, McPhee broke into professional baseball in 1877 as a catcher with the Davenport Brown Stockings of the Northwestern League. He played for Davenport for three seasons, shifting to second base during the 1879 season. After not playing baseball in 1880, he joined an independent team in Akron, Ohio in 1881. Before the 1882 season, he signed a contract to play for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, a team in the newly formed American Association.

Playing career

Making his major league debut on May 2, 1882, the 22-year-old McPhee had a batting average of just .228, but he led the league in several fielding categories, including putouts and fielding percentage. With McPhee in the lineup for 78 out of their 80 games, the Red Stockings won the inaugural AA championship. McPhee was the only starting second baseman Cincinnati would have for the first eighteen seasons of its existence, accompanying the team to the National League in 1890, when they became the Cincinnati Reds. In last two seasons of his career, he was the oldest player in the major leagues.

John McPhee (motorcycle racer)

John McPhee (born 14 July 1994) is a British Grand Prix motorcycle racer. He is also a former competitor of the British 125GP Championship, and the Spanish 125GP/Moto3 Championship.

For 2012, McPhee entered three rounds (5, 6 and 12) as a wildcard rider with the Racing Steps Foundation KRP Honda. For Round 14 onwards he raced with Caretta Technology replacing Alexis Masbou who broke his leg in a testing accident. McPhee raced his KRP Honda chassis with the Honda NSF250R engine fitted.

McPhee signed for Racing Team Germany for the 2013 season, replacing the Moto2 bound Louis Rossi. McPhee finished 19th and 13th in his first two seasons with the team. In 2015, McPhee took his first podium finish with a second place at Indianapolis; in a wet-to-dry race, McPhee pitted at the end of the formation lap for slick tyres, and finished almost 40 seconds behind race winner Livio Loi, who had started on slicks.
