John Martyn, OBE (11 September 1948 – 29 January 2009), born as Iain David McGeachy, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a 40-year career, he released 21 studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Phil Collins. He was described by The Times as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues".
Biography
Early life
Martyn was born in Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden, London, England to an English mother and a Scottish father. His parents, both opera singers, divorced when he was five and he spent his childhood alternating between Scotland and England. Much of this was spent in the care of his grandmother, as well as on his mother's houseboat. He attended Shawlands Academy in Glasgow. At school, he was a keen rugby player. On leaving school he attended Art College in Glasgow, but left to pursue his musical aspirations.

John Martyn or Joannis Martyn (12 September 1699 – 29 January 1768) was an English botanist.
Life
Martyn was born in London, the son of a merchant. He attended a school in the vicinity of his home, and when he turned 16, worked for his father, intending to follow a business career. He abandoned this idea in favour of medical and botanical studies. His interest in botany came from his acquaintance with an apothecary, John Wilmer, and Dr. Patrick Blair, a surgeon-apothecary from Dundee who practiced in London. Martyn gave some botanical lectures in London in 1721 and 1726, and in 1727 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
Martyn was one of the founders (with Johann Jacob Dillenius and others) and the secretary of a botanical society which met for a few years in the Rainbow coffee-house, Watling Street.
In 1732 he was appointed Professor of Botany at Cambridge University, but, finding little encouragement and hampered by a lack of equipment, he soon ceased lecturing. He retained his professorship, however, till 1768, when he resigned in favour of his son Thomas. On resigning the botanical chair at Cambridge he presented the university with a number of his botanical specimens and books.
John Martyn (publisher)
John Martyn, or Martin (died in 1680) was a prominent London publisher and bookseller in the second half of the 17th century.
Martyn started in business in 1649, in partnership with John Ridley; their shop was at the sign of the Castle in Fleet Street, near Ram Alley. In 1651, Martyn began an independent establishment at the sign of the Bell in St. Paul's Churchyard, "without Temple bar." He continued there for the remainder of his career. He often worked in partnership with other London stationers; he was joined at the Bell by James Allestry, who was his partner there from 1652 until 1664, when Allestry opened his own shop at the sign of the Rose and Crown. They were joined by Thomas Dicas, from 1660 to Dicas's death in 1669. In 1663 Allestry and Martyn became the monopoly publishers for the Royal Society; Martyn continued in this role after Allestry's death in November 1670.
Allestry and Martyn, and then Martyn alone, served as the Royal Society's publishers through the crucial first two decades of the organization's existence. They issued all of its printed documents, including the Philosophical Transactions; they published Thomas Sprat's History of the Royal Society (1667), and Robert Hooke's Micrographia (1665). On his own, Martyn was an accomplished publisher of law books and of texts in Latin and Greek; his edition of Thomas Blount's legal dictionary Νομο-λεχικον ("Novo-lexicon," 1671) is a noteworthy example.
John Martyn (schoolmaster)
John A. K. Martyn OBE Padma Shri (more commonly known as J. A. K. Martyn) (1903–1984), was an English schoolmaster, scholar, academic and a distinguished British Himalayan mountaineer.
Career
In 1935, John Martyn accompanied Arthur Foot to India to establish the teaching staff of The Doon School, a newly opened boarding school for Indian boys. Martyn had previously taught at Harrow School in England for ten years before he moved to India. In Doon, he was given the post of Deputy Headmaster, which he kept till 1948. Shortly after the British withdrawal from India in 1947, Foot left Dehradun to take up the headship of Ottershaw School, and Martyn succeeded him to become the second headmaster of the Doon School. Martyn served in Doon for 31 years, 18 of those as the Headmaster, thus becoming one of the longest serving schoolmasters in the school's history.
Apart from teaching, Martyn was very keen on mountaineering, and was part of the expedition team to Trisul with pioneers like Jack Gibson, Gurdial Singh and Nandu Jayal. He, along with Jack Gibson, climbed Bandarpunch with Tenzing Norgay, who later became the first man to climb Mt. Everest.
John Martyn (academic)
John Martyn (died 1473), also known as John Marten, was a Master of University College, Oxford, England.
Martyn was a Fellow at University College from 1427. As the Senior Fellow of the College, he became Master in 1441, a post he held until his death in 1473. This was a long time (32 years), especially for the period. It is probably the longest period at any Oxford college before 1500. During his time as Master, University College attained its first quadrangle or "quad".
