John Kennedy College

John Kennedy College is a boys school in Beau-Bassin, Mauritius. It is one of the largest secondary schools in Mauritius. It was founded in 1963 and inaugurated by the then Governor General Sir John Shaw Rennie. It is the third star boy college in Mauritius (Royal College Curepipe and Royal College Port Louis being first and second respectively). Students from this college are called "Kennedians".

Overview

John Kennedy College is an elite boy's high school in Beau Bassin, Mauritius. Founded in 1963 and inaugurated by the then Governor General Sir John Shaw Rennie, the school bears the name of former American president John F. Kennedy. Since its foundation, the college has undergone substantial changes both structurally and in its pedagogical system.

The main areas of focus of John Kennedy College are the Sciences, Technical Areas and Economics. John Kennedy College was initially more technically oriented, basically because when the school was built it had state-of-the-art workshops and equipment. However, over the years the school also made its name in the field of science.

John F. Kennedy

John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), commonly referred to by his initials JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the establishment of the Peace Corps, developments in the Space Race, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Civil Rights Movement, the "New Frontier" domestic program,and abolition of the federal death penalty in the District of Columbia all took place during his presidency. Kennedy also avoided any significant increase in the American presence in Vietnam, refusing to commit combat troops and keeping the level of others, mostly military advisors, to only 16,000, compared to the 536,000 troops committed by his successor, Lyndon Johnson, by 1968.

Kennedy's time in office is also marked by high tensions with Communist states, particularly Cuba. An attempt in April 1961 at the Bay of Pigs to overthrow the country's dictator, Fidel Castro, was thwarted by armed forces within three days. His administration subsequently rejected plans by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to orchestrate false-flag attacks on American soil in order to gain public approval for a war against Cuba. In October 1962, it was discovered Soviet ballistic missiles had been deployed in Cuba; the resulting period of unease, often termed the Cuban Missile Crisis, is seen by many historians as the closest the human race has ever come to war featuring the use of nuclear weapons on both or multiple sides.

John Kennedy (third baseman)

John Edward Kennedy (born May 29, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American former Major League Baseball third baseman, shortstop and second baseman. He played from 1965 to 1974 for the Washington Senators, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, and Boston Red Sox.

Major League career

Kennedy spent twelve seasons in the major leagues. He hit a home run in his first major league at bat (on September 5, 1962, against Dick Stigman of the Minnesota Twins), and garnered headlines because both his name and birthdate, May 29, were shared with the President of the United States at the time, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was born 24 years earlier.

His only season as a full-time regular was with the 1964 Washington Senators under manager Gil Hodges, primarily as a third baseman, but also playing at shortstop and second base. Kennedy hit .230 with seven home runs and 35 runs batted in. After the 1964 season, he was traded with pitcher Claude Osteen and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers for five players, including outfielder Frank Howard. With the Dodgers, Kennedy would be part of history when he replaced Jim Gilliam at third base in the eighth inning of Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965. The New York Yankees acquired Kennedy in a trade after the 1966 season, then sold him to the expansion Seattle Pilots after the 1968 season. Kennedy retired in 1974 after four and a half seasons with the Boston Red Sox.

John Kennedy (British Army officer)

Major General Sir John Kennedy GBE CB CMG DSO (1878–1948) was a British Army officer who commanded 1st Infantry Division.

Military career

Educated at Haileybury, Kennedy was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1898. He served with the Egyptian Army until World War I when he fought on the Western Front: he became Commanding Officer of 7th Bn Seaforth Highlanders in 1916 and Commander of 26th (Highland) Brigade in 1917. He was appointed Inspector of Infantry in 1918, Instructor at the Senior Officers School in 1919 and Commanding Officer of 2nd Bn The Buffs in 1923. He went on to be Commander of 19th Indian Infantry Brigade in 1926, General Officer Commanding 44th (Home Counties) Infantry Division in 1932 and General Officer Commanding 1st Infantry Division in 1934 before retiring in 1937.
