John Hopwood

John Hopwood (1745 – June 2, 1802) was an American civil servant during the American Revolutionary War and founded the town of Hopwood, Pennsylvania (originally named "Woodstock"). John Hopwood was born in Virginia and married Hannah Bearcroft/Barecroft Humphreys, the young widow of Joseph Humphries, in 1770.

According to local and family lore, he was a neighbor and trusted friend of George Washington, who in recognition of his merit, selected him as an aide-de-camp and assigned him the responsibility of selecting winter quarters for the French Army. However, there is no supporting evidence of this beyond local histories compiled in the late 19th century.

Purported military service

According to a roll of Captain Alex Smith, Company of Colonel Rawlings’ Regiment commanded by Colonel J. Hall, a John Hopwood served under Captain Thomas Bell’s Company for a period of three years. The Maryland Revolutionary War Militia muster rolls also list a John Hopwood as being a member of the 6th Company Montgomery County, Maryland Militia in September 1777 and as being a member of the 6th Company, commanded by Captain Thomas Conner, on July 15, 1780; under the Command of Colonel Archibald Orme.

John Hopwood (artist)

John Hopwood is a British painter. His early work was figurative but his later work work is mainly abstraction.

Early life

John Hopwood was born in Wiltshire on 26 March 1942, and died on 3 January 2015... His parents were Daisy and Fred Hopwood, and he was an only child. The family moved when John was 3 years old to Hare Hatch in Berkshire, where John attended school. His parents worked for Lord and Lady Remnant of Bear Place as their gardener and housekeeper. Hopwood studied art at Berkshire College of Art in Maidenhead (1958-1962).

Career

John Hopwood painted continuously after leaving art school. His work was initially figurative. He lived in Wytham near Oxford for seven years and was briefly married (1970-1972). He left Wytham in 1975 and returned to Holt Cottage in Hare Hatch. He took a part-time job as a gardener for the Remnant family, in order to support himself while continuing to paint. He radically changed his painting style around 1990, towards a "semi-abstract" style. He moved to St. Ives in 1997 and married Annie de Boel, in 1999.

John Hopwood (cricketer)

John Anthony Hopwood (23 October 1926 – May 2002) was an English cricketer. Hopwood was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Herne Bay, Kent, and was educated at Dulwich College.

Hopwood made a single first-class appearance the Free Foresters against Cambridge University at Fenner's in 1951. In a match which ended as a draw, Hopwood opened the batting in the Free Foresters first-innings, scoring 8 runs before he was dismissed by Owen Wait, while in their second-innings he again opened the batting and was dismissed by the same bowler for a single run. This was his only first-class appearance.

He died at Fleetwood, Lancashire in May 2002.
