John Hayes (director)

John Hayes (March 1, 1930 – August 21, 2000) was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Hayes is best known for directing low-budget B-movie features and later, exploitation films.

Biography

Career

Hayes began his career in the 1950s producing and directing short films. In 1959, he was nominated for an Academy Award for the short film The Kiss.

In 1961, he directed his first full length film The Grass Eater. In addition to directing, Hayes also served as producer and writer on many of his films. Occasionally, Hayes appeared in bit parts in television and films, mainly his own features.

Hayes died of cancer in 2000.

John Hayes (footballer, born 1939)

John Hayes (born 6 August 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

A defender, Hayes came to Fitzroy from Warracknabeal. Hayes captained Fitzroy for most of the 1966 VFL season, replacing Ralph Rogerson, who retired five rounds into the year. He then moved to Yarrawonga, a club which he would captain-coach.

John Hayes (25 January 1643 – 22 March 1705) was an English politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Winchelsea from 1698 to January 1701, and from November 1701 to 1702.

He died aged 62.

John Hayes (art historian)

John Trevor Hayes CBE FRSA (21 January 1929 – 25 December 2005) was a British art historian and museum director. He was an authority on the paintings of Thomas Gainsborough.

Life and career

Hayes was educated at Ardingly College and read modern history at Keble College, Oxford after which he undertook a postgraduate diploma at the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 1954 he became assistant keeper of the London Museum in Kensington Palace, the forerunner to the modern Museum of London. He developed an interest in Gainsborough after realising that British artists had hitherto been neglected by art-historical scholarship. Taking advantage of a Commonwealth Fund fellowship, he travelled to the United States and spent a year as a Research Scholar at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University from 1958 to 1959. After his return he curated a Gainsborough exhibition for the Arts Council and in 1962 he received his PhD for research into Gainsborough's landscape paintings. He was Visiting Professor of Fine Arts at Yale University from 1960 to 1970.
