John Hay

John Milton Hay (October 8, 1838 – July 1, 1905) was an American statesman and official whose career in government stretched over almost half a century. Beginning as a private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln, Hay's highest office was United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Hay was also an author and biographer, and wrote poetry and other literature throughout much of his life.

Born in Indiana to an anti-slavery family that moved to Illinois when he was young, Hay showed great potential, and his family sent him to Brown University. After graduation in 1858, Hay read law in his uncle's office in Springfield, Illinois, adjacent to that of Lincoln. Hay worked for Lincoln's successful presidential campaign, and became one of his private secretaries at the White House. Throughout the American Civil War, Hay was close to Lincoln, and stood by his deathbed after the President was shot at Ford's Theatre. In addition to his other literary works, Hay co-authored with John George Nicolay a multi-volume biography of Lincoln that helped shape the assassinated president's historical image.

John Hay (cardiologist)

John Hay (25 November 1873 – 21 April 1959) was a British cardiologist.

He was born in Birkenhead, Lancashire, the son of a Scottish architect and educated at the Liverpool Institute and the Victoria University of Manchester, qualifying M.B. in 1896.

From 1900 to 1903 he was medical tutor and registrar at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. In 1905 he identified a form of second degree AV block. In 1907 he was appointed Assistant Physician and set up the first specialised heart department in the north of England.

During WWI he served at the 1st Western General Hospital, becoming a lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1915 and in 1923 delivered their Bradshaw Lecture on Prognosis in Angina Pectoris. In 1924 he was appointed Professor of Medicine (part-time) at the University of Liverpool. He retired to live at Bowness in the Lake District, where he died in 1959.

He had married in 1906 Agnes Margaret Duncan, daughter of William Duncan of Tyldesley, Lancashire. They had two sons and two daughters.

John Hay (Henley MP)

John Albert Hay (24 November 1919— 27 January 1998) was a British Conservative politician.

Hay was born in Brighton, Sussex to John Edward Hay (Mayor of Brighton 1953) and May Hollingdale. He was brother to author Peter Thomas Hay. He was educated at Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School. He served as a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Navy during World War II and was invalided out. He married Beryl Found, the only daughter of Ret. Commander Herbert Found R.N and Alice Found. They had two children, Victoria (b. 1949) and Richard (b. 1953) Their marriage ended in divorce.

Hay worked as a solicitor practising in Brighton and London. He served as Chairman of the Young Conservatives 1947-49 and was elected to Parliament in 1950 as Member for Henley, South Oxfordshire. He became Parliamentary Private Secretary to the President of the Board of Trade, 1951–55, and later served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport from 1959 to 1963 under Ernest Marples, where he introduced parking meters, and as the last Civil Lord of the Admiralty from 1963 to 1964, whereupon the reorganisation of the Ministry of Defence he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Army until the Labour Party won the October 1964 General Election.

John Hay (Canadian politician)

John Hay (June 26, 1862 – January 16, 1925) was a Canadian politician.

Born in Chatham, Canada East, Hay was a farmer. He was mayor of Lachute from 1907 to 1909. He ran unsuccessfully for the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in the riding of Argenteuil in 1892. He was elected in a 1910 by-election and was defeated in 1912. A Liberal, he was elected in 1916 and served until his death in 1925 in Lachute.

Sir John Hay KCMG (23 June 1816 – 20 January 1892) was a New South Wales politician.

Life

Hay was born at Little Ythsie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of John Hay (a farmer) and his wife Jean, née Mair. Hay graduated M.A. at King's College (now part of the University of Aberdeen), in 1834, and then studied law at Edinburgh, but did not finish it. In 1838 Hay married Mary Chalmers and they travelled to Sydney on the Amelia Thompson, arriving on 1 July and settled at Welaregang on the Upper Murray. Hay migrated to Sydney in 1838 and took up land in the Murrumbidgee district and became a successful squatter.

Hay was a strong opponent of tariffs on trade between New South Wales and Victoria and was elected in April 1856 as the member for Murrumbidgee in the first Legislative Assembly and took up residence in Sydney. In September, he moved a vote of no-confidence in the Cowper ministry, which brought the government down. Hay recommended to governor William Denison that Henry W. Parker should be asked to form a coalition ministry in which Hay was secretary for lands and works. This ministry was defeated in September 1857 and Hay did not again hold office. In 1859, he was elected as a member of the new seat of Murray and strongly opposed John Robertson's land bills and sought to protect the interests of squatters. In the December 1860 elections, fought on the issue, he was one a few opponents of Robertson elected.
