John Godfrey

John Ferguson Godfrey, PC (born December 19, 1942) is a Canadian educator, journalist and former Member of Parliament.

Background

Godfrey was born in Toronto, Ontario. His father, Senator John Morrow Godfrey (June 28, 1912 – March 8, 2001), was a Canadian pilot, lawyer and politician. John Godfrey graduated from Upper Canada College in 1960. In 1961, he attended the Neuchâtel Junior College in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

In 1965, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College, University of Toronto and in 1967, he received a Master of Philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from St Antony's College, Oxford in 1975. He worked as an economist, historian and journalist. In the mid-1970s Godfrey was a history professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He served as president of the University of King's College from 1977-87. From 1987 to 1991 he was editor of the Financial Post.

Politics

He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the Toronto area riding of Don Valley West in the 1993 election, and was re-elected in each subsequent vote until his resignation in 2008.

John Godfrey (cricketer)

John Frederick Godfrey (born 18 August 1917 at Garsington, Oxfordshire; died October 1995 at Newton Abbot, Devon) was an English cricketer. Godfrey was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium.

Godfrey made his first-class debut for Hampshire in 1939 against the touring West Indians. This was Godfrey's sole first-class match before the Second World War. In addition to a sole first-class appearance for Hampshire, Godfrey also played two Minor Counties Championship matches for Oxfordshire, with both matches coming against Berkshire.

After the war, Godfrey returned to play for Hampshire where he made his County Championship debut against Sussex. From 1946 to 1947 Godfrey represented the county in eleven first-class matches, the last of which came against Glamorgan. Godfrey was primarily a bowler, although with the ball he failed to impress in first-class cricket with 15 wickets at an expensive bowling average of 50.20 and best figures of 4/116.

In 1948 Godfrey returned to play for Oxfordshire, where he represented the county in five further Counties Championship matches from 1948 to 1949, with his final appearance for Oxfordshire coming against Buckinghamshire.

John Godfrey is a composer and performer, co-founder and musical director of Icebreaker (1989-1997), founder member of Crash Ensemble (1997–present), founder of the Quiet Music Ensemble, and lecturer in music at National University of Ireland, Cork.

John Godfrey studied with Oliver Knussen at the Royal College of Music, Peter Maxwell Davies at the Dartington Summer School and with Richard Orton at the University of York, where he graduated with a BA Hons in music (1983) and an MPhil in composition (1989).

In 1989 he and another York graduate, James Poke, formed the new-music group Icebreaker, which went on to become one of the most successful ensembles in its field, appearing extensively in Europe and America. The group made several CDs for Decca Argo, New Tone and Donemus, which include John's works Euthanasia and Garden Instruments, S U S Y W I M P S and "Gallows Hill", as well as his arrangements of Diderik Wagenaar's Metrum and Steve Martland's Shoulder to Shoulder. John appears as a performer on all Icebreaker's CDs up to and including Rogue's Gallery.
