John Fisher

John Fisher (c. 19 October 1469 – 22 June 1535), venerated by Roman Catholics as Saint John Fisher, was an English Catholic bishop and theologian. He was a man of learning, associated with the intellectuals and political leaders of his day, and eventually became Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

Fisher was executed by order of Henry VIII during the English Reformation for refusing to accept the king as Supreme Head of the Church of England and for upholding the Catholic Church's doctrine of papal primacy. He was named a cardinal shortly before his death. He is honoured as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church. He shares his feast day with St Thomas More on 22 June in the Roman Catholic calendar of saints and on 6 July in that of the Church of England.

Early life

John Fisher was born in Beverley, Yorkshire, in 1469, the eldest son of Robert Fisher, a modestly prosperous merchant of Beverley, and Agnes, his wife. He was one of four children. His father died when John was eight. His mother remarried and had five more children by her second husband, William White. Fisher seems to have had close contacts with his extended family all his life. Fisher's early education was probably received in the school attached to the collegiate church in his home town. He attended Beverley Grammar School, an old foundation claiming to date from the year 700. In the present day, one of the houses at the school is named in Fisher's honour.

John Percy

John Percy (Piercey; alias John Fisher) (27 September 1569 at Holmeside, Durham – 3 December 1641 in London) was an English Jesuit priest and controversialist.

Life

A Catholic convert aged 14, he went first to Reims, in 1586, then to the English College, Rome, 1589-94. Returning to Belgium, he entered the Jesuit novitiate, 2 May 1594, and then set out for England in 1596. He was, however, arrested by the Dutch, tortured, and sent prisoner to London.

He managed to escape, and became the companion of Father Gerard in several adventures. He was seized at Great Harrowden (November, 1605) at the time of the Gunpowder Plot, but was eventually banished at the request of the Spanish ambassador (1606). Retiring to Belgium he was for a time head of the English Jesuits, then professor of Scripture at the Jesuit house of studies in Leuven, after which he returned again to England.

He was again imprisoned and condemned to death (1610). He had already begun to write on current controversies, and when James I of England desired a series of disputations in 1622, Percy, who was then in a prison in London, was required to defend the Catholic side. In these disputations King James himself and William Laud took a leading part. These controversies were afterwards printed and discussed by Percy and John Floyd on the Catholic side, and by Laud, Francis White, John White, Daniel Featley, and Anthony Wotton on the Protestant.

John Fisher (priest)

The Ven John Fisher was Archdeacon of Berkshire from 1817 to 1832.

Born at Brentford on 30 May 1788, he was educated at Charterhouse and Christ's College, Cambridge and ordained in 1812. His first post was as Domestic Chaplain to his uncle, the Bishop of Salisbury. He held incumbencies at Idmiston, Osmington, Winfrith Newburgh and Gillingham, Dorset. He was appointed a Canon of Salisbury Cathedral in 1819.

He died at Boulogne on 25 August 1832.

Green Party of Ontario candidates, 2003 Ontario provincial election

The Green Party of Ontario fielded 102 candidates in the 2003 provincial election in Ontario, Canada, none of whom were elected. The only riding which the party did not contest was Oakville. Zakaria Belghali had been selected as the GPO candidate, but did not collect enough signatures to have his candidacy validated by Elections Ontario.

Ron Yurick (Algoma—Manitoulin)

From Chapleau, where he is a member of the Watershed Management Study Committee. He used to chair a Public Liaison Committee relating to the Adams Mine Landfall Proposal in Timiskaming. Testified before a Select Committee on Ontario in Confederation in 1991. Yurick supports the principle of bilingualism, opposes the British monarchy, and believes that Northern Ontario's concerns are often ignored by the Canadian government and business elite. A member at large on the Green Party of Ontario council. Opposes sending garbage from Toronto to Kirkland Lake. Led the party's constitutional rewriting process in 2004. Received 680 votes (2.4%), finishing last in a field of four candidates. The winner was Mike Brown of the Ontario Liberal Party.

John Fischer (baseball)

John Fischer (August 1855 – February 9, 1942) was a 19th-century Major League Baseball player. He played pitcher and occasionally first base during the 1884 season for the Philadelphia Keystones of the Union Association and during the 1885 season for the Buffalo Bisons of the National League. He also played in the Eastern League for part of the 1885 season and in the Pennsylvania State Association in 1886.

John Fisher (Australian rules footballer)

John Fisher (10 October 1937 – 24 January 1998) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the VFL.

A wingman, Fisher debuted for Hawthorn in 1957 but it took a couple of seasons before he became a regular in the side. He won the Gardiner Medal in 1958 for the best player in the VFL reserves competition.
