John Farrar

John Clifford Farrar (/ˈfɑːrər/; born 8 November 1946) is an Australian-born music producer, songwriter, arranger, singer and guitarist. As a musician, Farrar is a former member of several rock and roll groups including The Mustangs (1963–64), The Strangers (1964–70), Marvin, Welch & Farrar (1970–73), and The Shadows (1973–76); in 1980 he released a solo eponymous album. As a songwriter and producer he worked with Olivia Newton-John from 1971 to 1989. He wrote her number-one hit singles: "Have You Never Been Mellow" (1975), "You're the One That I Want" (1978 duet with John Travolta), "Hopelessly Devoted to You" (1978), and "Magic" (1980). He also produced the majority of her recorded material during that time including her number-one albums, If You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974), Have You Never Been Mellow (1975) and Olivia's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (1982); and he was a co-producer of Grease (1978) – the soundtrack for the film of the same name. Farrar also produced Newton-John's first United States number-one hit single, "I Honestly Love You", which was awarded the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1975. In 1969 Farrar married fellow Australian singer, Pat Carroll – formerly Newton-John's singing partner. In July 1970 Farrar and Carroll relocated to the United Kingdom and from late 1975 they have resided in the US. They are the parents of Sam Farrar (Phantom Planet bassist and Maroon 5 touring member) and Max Farrar (Golden Ghost guitarist and keyboardist).

John C. Farrar

John Chipman Farrar (February 25, 1896 – November 5, 1974) was an American editor, writer and publisher. Farrar founded two publishing companies — Farrar & Rinehart and Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He also conceived and founded the Breadloaf Writers' Conference in 1926.

Life

Farrar was born in Burlington, Vermont. After serving in World War I, as an aviation inspector, he graduated in 1919 from Yale University, where he contributed to campus humor magazine The Yale Record and was a member of Skull and Bones. In that year his book Forgotten Shrines was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize.

He became editor of The Bookman, up to its 1927 purchase by Seward Collins. Going into publishing, he worked for two years at Doubleday, Doran and Company. Then in 1929 he was a founder of the house of Farrar & Rinehart, with Stanley M. Rinehart Jr. and Frederick R. Rinehart, sons of Mary Roberts Rinehart who had also been at Doubleday Doran.

Later, after war work in WWII, he was a founder of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Also, he is considered to be influential in the successful establishment of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference at Middlebury College in Middleburg, Vermont.

John Farrar (scientist)

John Farrar (July 1, 1779 – May 8, 1853) was an American scholar. He first coined the concept of hurricanes as “a moving vortex and not the rushing forward of a great body of the atmosphere”, after the Great September Gale of 1815. Farrar remained Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard University between 1807 and 1836. During this time, he introduced modern mathematics into the curriculum. He was also a regular contributor to the scientific journals.

Life and works

After attending Phillips Academy, Andover, and graduating from Harvard in 1803, Farrar then studied theology at Phillips Academy, and in 1805 was appointed Greek tutor at Harvard. Farrar was chosen Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in 1807. He retained the chair till 1836, when he resigned in consequence of a painful illness that finally caused his death. His second wife, Eliza Ware Farrar (née Rotch), was Flemish. She married him in 1828. She authored several children's books.

John Farrar (minister)

Rev. John Farrar (1802–1884) was a Methodist minister. He was Secretary of the annual British Methodist Conference on fourteen occasions, and was twice its elected President. Farrar was tutor and governor of several Wesleyan colleges. These included the early Wesleyan training college at Abney House, near London; and British Methodism's first purpose-built college at Richmond, now Richmond University.

Life

Farrar, the third and youngest son of the Rev. John Farrar (d.1837), a Wesleyan minister, was born at Alnwick, Northumberland, on 29 July 1802. On the opening of Woodhouse Grove School, Yorkshire, for the education of the sons of ministers, on 12 January 1812, he became one of its first pupils. On leaving school, he was employed as a teacher in an academy conducted by Mr. Green at Cottingham, near Hull. In August 1822, he entered the Wesleyan ministry, and spent his four years of probation as second-master in Woodhouse Grove School. He was afterwards resident minister successively at Sheffield, Huddersfield, Macclesfield and London, until in 1839 he was appointed tutor and governor of Abney House Training College in Stoke Newington, London, the larger part of whose grounds had recently become an arboretum and cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery.
