John Eldridge, Jr.

Lieutenant Commander John Eldridge, Jr., USN (10 October 1903 – 2 November 1942) was a United States Navy officer who received the Navy Cross posthumously for his role in the U.S. invasion of the Solomon Islands during World War II.

Biography

Eldridge was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1927. After flight training at Pensacola, Florida, he served at various stations on aviation duty. From 11 September 1941 he was Commander, Scouting Squadron 71, attached to Wasp (CV-7). LCDR Eldridge was killed in action in the Solomon Islands on 2 November 1942. For his extraordinary heroism in leading the air attack on Japanese positions in the initial invasion of the Solomons on 7 August and 8 August 1942, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

Namesake

The destroyer escort USS Eldridge (DE-173) was named in his honor.

John Chambers Eldridge (1872 — 17 April 1954), Australian politician, was the Member for the Division of Martin in the Australian House of Representatives from 12 October 1929 to 19 December 1931.

Eldridge was the son of John Reuben Eldridge and Caroline Chambers. On 23 October 1895 he married Marie Mertel, a saleswoman born in Berlin, Germany, and together they had five daughters and one son. In 1916, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.

Eldridge was an accountant for the Government of New South Wales before he was elected to the Parliament as a member of the Australian Labor Party. He represented Martin until 1931, when he attempted to transfer to the nearby seat of Barton as a member of the Lang Labor Party but was defeated by the United Australia Party candidate. He died in 1954 at the age of 82.

John Eldridge (sociologist)

John Eldridge is a British sociologist known for his writings on Industrial Sociology and on Max Weber as well as for being a founder member of the media analysis research group the Glasgow Media Group. Eldridge is Professor Emeritus at the University of Glasgow and a visiting professor of sociology at the University of Strathclyde He was President of the British Sociological Association 1979-1981.

He gained B Sc (Econ) from the University of London, and an MA from Leicester University.
