John Dolphin

John Robert Vernon Dolphin CBE TD (1 October 1905 – 2 May 1973) was a British engineer and inventor who joined the Secret Intelligence Service and then became the Commanding Officer of the top secret Second World War Special Operations Executive (SOE) 'Station IX' where specialist military equipment was developed. During his time there his inventions included the Welman midget submarine and the Welbike Parachutists' Motorcycle. On leaving the British Army he founded a number of companies, including the Corgi Motorcycle Co Ltd. in 1946 and also set up Dolphin Industrial Developments Ltd, and Hydraulic Developments Ltd, which he ran until 1950 when he became Chief Engineer at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. He then went on to become Engineer-in-Chief at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Research Group, until 1959 and became joint Managing Director of Lansing Bagnall Ltd and J. E. Shay Ltd until 1964, and a Director of TI (Group Services) Ltd, where he successfully secured patents for a number of inventions, including sheet piling revetments, improvements to fork lift trucks and the forerunner of the modern mobility scooter. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1956 Queen's Birthday Honours. He died 2 May 1973(1973-05-02) (aged 67) in Whitchurch-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

John Dolphin (music producer)

John Grayton Dolphin also known as Lovin John, was born in the Southern town of Beatrice, Alabama in 1902 to Lewis (Stallworth) Dolphin and Elyce Dolphin. He left Beatrice at a very young age and moved to Boley, Oklahoma, where he was raised. He later moved to Detroit, Michigan and finally settled in Los Angeles, California. He opened Dolphin's Of Hollywood, an influential record store that remained open 24 hours a day. He was a successful businessman, independent record label owner, and music producer.

Career

In 1950 Dolphin started his first label, Recorded In Hollywood (RIH). His first chart success came in 1951, "Once There Lived A Fool", by Duke Ellington's vocalist Jimmy Grissom. The song, penned by Jessie Mae Robinson, became the subject of almost a dozen covers, by Tony Bennett, Charles Brown, Tommy Edwards, Savannah Churchill, John Greer, Jimmy Witherspoon and others. He worked on other National hit songs such as "Buzz-Buzz-Buzz", by the Hollywood Flames, "The Jerk" by The Larks, and "Make me Yours" by Betty Swann. His contributions to music spans from Jazz to Rock'n'Roll. He worked with artists such as Sam Cooke, Jesse Belvin, Charles Mingus, Pee Wee Crayton, Major Lance, Scatman Crothers, Harry Caesar, Tony Allen, Gene Forrest, Percy Mayfield, Damita Jo, Marvin Phillips, Jesse Belvin, Illinois Jacquet and Linda Hayes. Dolphin produced several famous records under the Recorded In Hollywood label, and eventually created other labels like Lucky Records, Cash Records, and finally, Money Records. Dolphin sold Money and its holdings to Don Pierce's Hollywood Records in 1956.

John Dolphin (cricketer)

John Dolphin (born 26 August 1804 at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire; died 21 June 1889, aged 84, at Antingham, Norfolk) was an English amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1825 to 1827.

John Dolphin, son of Rev. John Dolphin (d.1831), was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge (admitted pensioner 29.6.1824, Matriculated Michaelmas 1824), Cricket ‘blue,’ 1827, BA 1828. As a cricketer he was mainly associated with Cambridge University and made 6 known appearances in first-class matches; a member of the Norfolk County XI, 1828-42. In later life he was a clergyman; Ordained deacon (London) 1 June 1828, priest, 14 June 1829, Curate of Wakes Colne, Essex, 1828–30, Rector of Pebmarsh, 1831–42, Rector of Antingham St Mary with Thorpe Market, and Bradfield, Norfolk, 1830–89, Rural Dean of Repps, 1869-87.

He married, 1833, Mary, 4th daughter of Admiral Western, of Tattingstone Park, near Ipswich.

Rev. John Dolphin, who died in 1831, was son of John Dolphin, of Shenstone, Staffordshire, armigerous; Christ Church, Oxford, matriculated 3.6.1791 aged 16; BA 1795, MA 1799, curate at Farmington, c1799, prebend of York 1813, Rector of Pebmarsh and Colne Wake, Essex from 1823 to his death 1831.
