John Dalton

John Dalton FRS (6 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) was an English chemist, physicist, and meteorologist. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of modern atomic theory; and his research into colour blindness, sometimes referred to as Daltonism, in his honour.

Early life

John Dalton was born into a Quaker family at the settlement of Eaglesfield, near the town of Cockermouth, in the county of Cumberland, England in 1766. His father was a weaver. He received his early education from his father and from Quaker John Fletcher, who ran a private school at Pardshaw Hall. With his family too poor to support him for long, he began to earn his living at the age of ten in the service of a wealthy local Quaker, Elihu Robinson. It is said he began teaching at a local school at age 12, and was proficient in Latin at age 14.

Early careers

He joined his older brother Jonathan at age 15 in running a Quaker school at Stramongate in Kendal, about forty five miles from his home. Around age 23 Dalton may have considered studying law or medicine, but his relatives did not encourage him, perhaps because being a Dissenter (a Christian opposed to a state religion and mandatory membership in the Church of England), he was barred from attending English universities. He acquired much scientific knowledge from informal instruction by John Gough, a blind philosopher who was gifted in the sciences and arts. At age 27 he was appointed teacher of mathematics and natural philosophy at the "New College" in Manchester, a dissenting academy. He remained there until age 34, when the college's worsening financial situation led him to resign his post and begin a new career as a private tutor for mathematics and natural philosophy.

John Dalton (hurler)

John Dalton (born 22 July 1985) is an Irish hurler who played as a corner-back for the Kilkenny senior team.

Dalton joined the team during the 2006 championship. However, it took two years before he became a regular member of the starting fifteen. Since then he has won five All-Ireland winner's medals as a non playing substitute and four Leinster winner's medals on the field of play. He announced his retirement following the conclusion of the 2011 championship.

At club level Dalton plays for Carrickshock, however, he has yet to win a county club championship winners' medal.

Playing career

Dalton has enjoyed great success with the Carrickshock club in all grades of competition.

After winning under-16, minor and under-21 county championships, Dalton joined the club's top team in the early 2000s. After losing back-to-back county finals at intermediate level, Carrickshock triumphed in 2004 with a win over Mooncoin. The club subsequently represented Kilkenny in the provincial series of games and ended the year as Leinster champions. The great run of success for Dalton's club came to an end in the All-Ireland final, when Kildangan of Tipperary defeated Carrickshock by 2-13 to 1-13.

John Dalton (musician)

John Dalton (born 21 May 1943, Enfield, Middlesex) is a British bass guitar player, best known as a member of The Kinks from 1969 to 1976, replacing original member Pete Quaife.

Biography

John Dalton was educated at Cheshunt Secondary Modern School at the same time as Harry Webb (who later found fame as Cliff Richard). Dalton's desire was to be a full-time musician, and in 1959 he joined "Danny King and The Bluejacks" as bass guitarist (although he claimed in a 2009 interview that he couldn't play a note when he joined.) He played alongside Norman Mitham who had just left Cliff Richard's first band.

Although successful locally, The Bluejacks recordings of "Say Mama" and Vince Taylor's rockabilly "Brand New Cadillac" did not feature in the UK Singles Chart, and in 1962 Dalton left to become a founder member of Mark Four along with Mick 'Spud' Thompson (rhythm guitar), Eddie Phillips (lead guitar), Jack Jones (drums) and Kenny Pickett (vocals). Mark Four quickly became one of the most popular live bands in North London and shared billing with other London-based groups such as The High Numbers (later to become The Who), Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, and even sharing a stage with Little Eva.

John Dalton (author)

John Dalton is an American author. His first novel, Heaven Lake won the 2005 Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the 2004 Barnes & Noble Discover Award in Fiction.

Dalton grew up near St. Louis, Missouri, as the youngest of seven children. He lived for a time in Douliou City, Taiwan (the setting for his first novel) during the late 1980s and travelled extensively in mainland China and Asia. He attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop in the 1990s but has now returned to St. Louis where he lives with his wife and two daughters. He is director of the MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

John Dalton (poet)

John Dalton (1709–1763) was an English cleric and poet. He is now remembered as a librettist.

Life

The son of the Rev. John Dalton, rector of Dean, Cumberland, he was born there; Richard Dalton was his brother. He received his school education at Lowther, Westmorland, and when sixteen years old was sent to The Queen's College, Oxford, entering the college as batler 12 October 1725, being elected taberdar 2 November 1730, and taking the degree of B.A. on 20 November 1730. Shortly afterwards he was selected as tutor to Lord Beauchamp, the only son of the Earl of Hertford, later Duke of Somerset.

Ill-health prevented Dalton from accompanying Lord Beauchamp on travels through Europe, ending in his death at Bologna in 1744. Dalton proceeded to his degree of M.A. on 9 May 1734, and on 21 April in the next year was allowed to accept a living from Queen's; his election to a fellowship there followed on 28 June 1741. For some time he was an assistant preacher under Thomas Secker, at St. James's, Westminster. Through the Duke of Somerset's influence he was appointed canon of the fifth stall in Worcester Cathedral in 1748, and about the same time obtained the rectory of St. Mary-at-Hill in the City of London.
