John Cleary (August 31, 1932 – October 7, 2012) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 2003.

Background

Cleary was born in Cornwall, Ontario, and was educated at St. Lawrence College. Elected as a councillor in Cornwall Township in 1972, he became the township's deputy reeve in 1974 and its reeve in 1976, serving in the latter capacity until 1987. He was chosen as warden for his region in 1983, and also served on the regional conservation authority from 1974 to 1987.

Politics

Cleary was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1987 provincial election, defeating Progressive Conservative Luc Guidon in the Cornwall riding by about 1,000 votes. The Liberals won a majority government in this region, and Cleary served as a government backbencher for the next three years. The Liberals were defeated by the Ontario New Democratic Party in the 1990 election, although Cleary managed to retain his own riding by an increased margin (despite having elected a member in the 1970s, the New Democrats have only a limited historical support base in Cornwall). In opposition, he served as his party's Agriculture Critic for the next five years. The Progressive Conservatives won a majority government in the 1995 election, though Cleary managed to increase his majority again in Cornwall. He continued serving as his party's agriculture critic until 1996, when he was shifted to rural affairs.

John Cleary (New South Wales politician)

John Joseph Cleary (29 April 1883 – 2 October 1962) was an Australian politician.

He was born at Pitt Town to farmer Thomas Cleary and Mary Ann, née Mackey, who were both Irish-born. He received a primary education but by the age of fourteen was working as a goldminer at Wyalong, then as a smelter with Duncanand Moyes, before returning to mining at Junee. After a two-year stint farming near Warra in Queensland, he settled in Forbes, where he was assistant town clerk (1908–15), an alderman (1912–15), and town clerk (1915–26). On 3 January 1906 he had married Alice Mary Brown, with whom he had nine children. In 1920 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a Labor member for Wollondilly, but he was defeated in 1922. From 1923 to 1926 he edited the Picton Post and worked as an estate agent until in 1926 he became proprietor of Bargo Hotel. In 1928 he became proprietor of the United States Hotel in Sussex Street, Sydney, and he was also town clerk at Molong from 1928 until his dismissal in 1932. Thereafter he worked for the Defence Department until 1945, when he retired. Cleary died at Canterbury in 1962.

Thomas John Cleary

(Thomas) John Cleary (born 29 June 1947) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Launceston, Tasmania. In 1979, he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly representing Franklin for the Liberal Party. He served as a minister from 1983 to 1986, when he was defeated; he was re-elected in 1988 and held the seat until his retirement in 1998. After leaving Tasmanian politics he spent a time as administrator of the Tiwi Islands while they were excised from Australian refugee status in 2003.

John Cleary (Gaelic footballer)

John Cleary (born 20 June 1963) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer who played as a left corner-forward for the Cork senior team.

Born in Castlehaven, County Cork, Cleary first excelled at Gaelic football in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1983 championship. Cleary immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won two All-Ireland medals, three Munster medals and one National Football League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions.

Cleary was a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions but never won a Railway Cup medal. At club level he is a three-time Munster medallist with Castlehaven. In addition to this Cleary also on two championship medals.

Cleary's sister, Nollaig Cleary, and his brother-in-law, Niall Cahalane, are also All-Ireland medallists with Cork.
