John Byron

Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, RN (8 November 1723 – 10 April 1786) was a Royal Navy officer. He was known as Foul-weather Jack because of his frequent encounters with bad weather at sea. As a midshipman, he sailed in the squadron under George Anson on his voyage around the world, though Byron made it to southern Chile, and returned to England with the captain of HMS Wager. He was governor of Newfoundland following Hugh Palliser, who left in 1768. He circumnavigated the world as a commodore with his own squadron in 1764-1766. He fought in battles in The Seven Years' War and the American Revolution. He rose to Vice Admiral of the White before his death in 1786.

His grandsons include the poet George Gordon Byron and George Anson Byron, admiral and explorer, who were the 6th and 7th Baron Byron, respectively.

Early career

Byron was the son of William Byron, 4th Baron Byron and Frances Berkeley. He joined the Royal Navy in 1731. In 1740, he accompanied George Anson on his voyage around the world as a midshipman aboard one of the several ships in the squadron. On 14 May 1741, HMS Wager under Captain Cheap (as Captain Dandy Kidd had died), was shipwrecked on the coast of Chile on what is now called Wager Island and Byron was one of the survivors. The survivors decided to split in two teams, one to make its way by boat to Rio de Janeiro on the Atlantic coast; the other, including John Byron and the Captain, to sail north along the Spanish colonial coast.

Sir John Byron (died 1623) was Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire in 1597. He was the son of Sir John Byron (died 1600). He had one daughter and tens sons, including some Cavalier commanders in the English Civil War: John Byron, 1st Baron Byron, Richard Byron, 2nd Baron Byron, Sir Robert Byron, Sir Philip Byron, and Sir Thomas Byron.

John Byron (died 1450)

Sir John Byron (1386–1450) was a landowner and politician. He had estates in Clayton near Manchester and at South Stoke (now Stoke Rochford) in Lincolnshire. He was Member of Parliament for Lancashire in 1421 and 1429, and for Lincolnshire in 1447. He was son of Sir Richard Byron, and married Margery, daughter of John Booth. His son Nicolas Byron inherited his estates.

John Byron (died 1567)

Sir John Byron or Beron (1487/88 – 1567) was an English knight of the Tudor era, who was Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire in 1529.

He was the son and heir of Sir Nicolas Byron, who was knighted by Prince Arthur in 1502.

Sir John lived at Colwick in Nottinghamshire, before being granted Newstead Abbey in the same county by Henry VIII of England on 26 May 1540. He was appointed Lieutenant of Sherwood Forest. He was also Steward of Manchester and Rochdale. He was a trusted adviser to Henry VIII, and was at court most of his life. He started work on Newstead, making it into a home for his family.

He was appointed Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire for 1523–24, 1527–28, 1542–43 and 1551–52. He was Custos Rotulorum of Nottinghamshire by 1562.

Family

He married twice: firstly Isabel Lemmington (or Lenington), by whom he had no issue and secondly Elizabeth, the daughter of William Costerdine of Lancashire, and also the widow of George Halgh of Halgh, Lancashire, with whom he had a son, John. His son, Sir John Byron (aka Little Sir John with the Great Beard), was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I of England and his grandson became the first Baron Byron.

John Byron (died 1600)

Sir John Byron (ca. 1526 – 1600) was an Elizabethan English landowner and knight. He was also known as Little Sir John with the Great Beard.

He was the son of Sir John Byron (died 1567) and lived at Clayton Hall, Manchester, and later Royton, both then in Lancashire and later still at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire, which he inherited from his father.

He was High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1572 and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1596. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1579.

He married Alice Strelley and had four sons and three daughters. His eldest son was Anthony who died before him in 1587 and thus he was succeeded by Sir John Byron (died 1623). One of his daughters was married to Sir Thomas Hutchinson of Owthorpe, Nottinghamshire. Their daughter Margaret Hutchinson is an ancestor of U.S. President Andrew Jackson.
