John Brough

John Brough (rhymes with "huff") (September 17, 1811 – August 29, 1865) was a War Democrat politician from Ohio. He served as the 26th Governor of Ohio during the final years of the American Civil War, dying in office of gangrene shortly after the war concluded.

Early life and career

Born in Marietta, Ohio, to an English immigrant and a Pennsylvania-born mother, Brough was orphaned at the age of 11. To support himself, he became a printer's apprentice, and later received three years of part-time education at Ohio University, where he worked part-time as a reporter for the Athens Mirror. He rose to become a newspaper publisher in Marietta and then in Lancaster, where he and his brother Charles purchased the Ohio Eagle, a paper that espoused the views of the Democratic Party.

Brough served two years as Clerk of the Ohio Senate (where he also served as the capital correspondent for his newspaper, as well as the Ohio Statesman). He was elected as a Democrat to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1837, representing the Fairfield-Hocking district, and served from 1838–39, chairing the Committee on Banks and Currency. He then took office as State Auditor, serving until 1845, when the Whigs swept most of the state's Democrats out of office in the Election of 1844.

John Brough (English footballer)

John Robert Brough (born 8 January 1973 in Ilkeston) is an English former professional footballer who made more than 200 appearances in the Football League playing for Shrewsbury Town, Hereford United and Cheltenham Town. He played as a centre back. He is currently the first team manager at Southern League side Cinderford Town.

Brough spent seven years with Cheltenham after joining from Hereford United at the start of season 1998-99, at the same time as Neil Grayson and David Norton. Brough made 208 appearances for Cheltenham in those seven years, scoring 14 goals. A strong centre back, John often found himself deployed as a successful makeshift centre forward. Brough scored the first and played a part in the second of 2 injury time goals that gave Cheltenham a 2-1 away victory over League rivals Rushden and Diamonds in the 98-99 season which saw promotion to the Football League. He joined Newport County from Aldershot Town in March 2006 and was released by Newport at the end of the 2006-07 season.

John Brough (Scottish footballer)

John Brough (born 31 March 1960) is a Scottish former professional footballer, who played for Heart of Midlothian and Partick Thistle in the Scottish Football League.
