John Addison

John Mervyn Addison (16 March 1920 – 7 December 1998) was a British composer best known for his film scores.

Early life

Addison was born in Chobham, Surrey to a father who was a colonel in the Royal Field Artillery, and this influenced the decision to send him to school at Wellington College, Berkshire. His grandfather was Lieut Col George Addison, who played for the Royal Engineers in the 1872 and 1874 FA Cup Finals.

At the age of sixteen he entered the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition with Gordon Jacob, oboe with Léon Goossens, and clarinet with Frederick Thurston. This education ended in 1939 with service in World War II. Addison served with the British XXX Corps in the 23rd Hussars. He was a tank officer in the Battle of Normandy and wounded at Caen, later participating in Operation Market Garden. At the end of the war, he returned to London to teach composition at the Royal College of Music.

Career

Addison is best known for his film scores. He won an Academy Award and a Grammy Award in the Best Original Score from a Motion Picture or Television Show category for the music to the 1963 film, Tom Jones. He also won a BAFTA Award for A Bridge Too Far (1977). His other film scores included A Taste of Honey (1961), Smashing Time (1967), The Honey Pot (1967),Sleuth (1972), Swashbuckler (1976) and the television series Centennial (1978).

Statutory Repairs, Edinburgh

The statutory notice system in Edinburgh, Scotland, was instituted after a series of incidents in the 1990s culminating in a serious accident in 1999 in which a person was killed. Statutory notices require homeowners to carry out repairs using council-approved builders to protect the architecture of a World Heritage city. This system is unique to Edinburgh.

The value of statutory notices issued by Edinburgh Council surveyors had increased from £9.2m in 2005 to more than £30m in 2010. The statutory notice means the council can commission repair work to be carried out on buildings in the city in order to stop them deteriorating, and then charges the owners for the work. The council keeps 15% of the costs.

A BBC Scotland Investigates programme, Scotland's Property Scandal, commissioned a quantity surveyor, Gordon Murdie, and a structural engineer, John Addison, to examine repairs carried out under the statutory notice system. Their view was that residents had been overcharged. The BBC alleged the work had been given to contractors who had not been approved.

John Addison (divine)

John Addison D.D. (fl. 1538), was an English divine. A native of the diocese of York, he was admitted to a fellowship at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge University in 1505, and graduated B.D. in 1519, and D.D. in 1523. He became chaplain to John Fisher, bishop of Rochester, and in the twenty-fifth year of the reign of Henry VIII he was attainted by parliament of misprision of treason for concealment of the pretended revelations of Elizabeth Barton, the "Holy Maid of Kent", and it was enacted that he should lose his spiritual promotions from 20 March 1533–4.

Dr Addison superintended the publication of Bishop Fisher's Assertionis Lutheranæ Confutatio, 1523, and had a grant from the king of the sole printing of it for three years. In about 1538 he wrote a book in support of the pope's supremacy over all bishops, to which a reply was made by Cuthbert Tunstal, bishop of Durham, and John Stokesly, bishop of London.

John Addison (c. 1765 – 30 January 1844) was a British composer and double-bass player.

Addison was born, lived, and died in London. He wrote six operettas which were very popular at the time, including, Sacred Drama, Elijah and Songs and Glees. He also authored a book on singing instruction, Singing Practically Treated in a Series of Instructions (1836). Addison's song, "The Woodland Maid" was included among sixteen entries in William Alexander Barrett's fifth volume of Standard English Songs.
