Joseph "Joe" Thompson (born 5 March 1989) is an English footballer who plays for Carlisle United as a midfielder. He has also played professionally for Rochdale.

Career

Rochdale

Thompson was born in Bath. He made his first team debut for Rochdale in May 2006 against Carlisle United during the 2005–06 season. The 2006–07 season saw him make 13 appearances and win the League Two Apprentice award. After being rewarded the League Two Apprentice award, Manager Keith Hill hope Thompson expectations would happen in a positive note. He signed his first professional contract with Rochdale on 5 July 2007. The 2007-08 season saw Thompson make twelve appearanace and scored his first Rochdale goal on 1 January 2008, in a 3-1 win over Darlington.

The 2008-09 season saw Thompson proved to be Thompson breakthrough season under the management of Keith Hill. Thompson scored his first goal of the season on 25 October 2008, in a 3-1 win over Aldershot Town. In his second game of the season against Aldershot Town on 31 January 2009, Thompson scored a hat-trick on during Rochdale's away against Aldershot Town, in a 4-2 win, followed up scoring in the next game on 3 February 2009, in a 2-0 win over Chester City. Thompson helped the club qualified for the play-offs against Gilligham, but unfortunately lose 2-1 on aggregate. Despite this, Thompson made thirty-three appearance and scoring five times in all competitions. For making a breakthrough season, Thompson signed a new one-year contract with Rochdale in the summer of 2009

Joe Thompson (rugby)

Joseph "Joe" Francis Thompson (22 December 1902 — 13 October 1983 (aged 80)) born in Hambrook, was an English born Welsh dual-code international rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1910s, '20s and '30s, playing representative level rugby union (RU) for Wales, and at club level for Cross Keys RFC, as a Number Eight, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, Wales, and Other Nationalities, and at club level for Leeds, as a prop, second-row, or loose forward/lock, i.e. number 8 or 10, 11 or 12, or 13, during the contested scrums, he died in Leeds.

In 1923, aged 20, Joe Thompson became a Dual-code rugby international, first playing in the Wales (RU) team at Twickenham Stadium and later that year for Wales (RL) in the rugby league international at the Fartown Ground, Huddersfield.
