Joe Sacco

Joe Sacco (born October 2, 1960) is a Maltese-American cartoonist and journalist. He is best known for his comics journalism, in particular in the books Palestine (1996) and Footnotes in Gaza (2009), on Israeli–Palestinian relations; and Safe Area Goražde (2000) and The Fixer (2003) on the Bosnian War.

Biography

Sacco was born in Malta on October 2, 1960. His father was an engineer and his mother was a teacher. At the age of one, he moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia, where he spent his childhood until 1972, when they moved to Los Angeles. He began his journalism career working on the Sunset High School newspaper in Beaverton, Oregon. While journalism was his primary focus, this was also the period of time in which he developed his penchant for humor and satire. He graduated from Sunset High in 1978.

Sacco earned his B.A. in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1981 in three years. He was greatly frustrated with the journalist work that he found at the time, later saying, "[I couldn't find] a job writing very hard-hitting, interesting pieces that would really make some sort of difference." After being briefly employed by the journal of the National Notary Association, a job which he found "exceedingly, exceedingly boring," and several factories, he returned to Malta, his journalist hopes forgotten. "...I sort of decided to forget it and just go the other route, which was basically take my hobby, which has been cartooning, and see if I could make a living out of that," he later told the BBC.

Joseph William Sacco (born February 4, 1969) is an American retired National Hockey League player and currently an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins. His younger brother David Sacco also played in the NHL.

Club career

Drafted in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sacco played for Boston University before joining the Leafs. Sacco also played for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers. In 738 NHL games, he had 94 goals and 119 assists.

Coaching career

In the 2005–06 season, two years into retirement from playing, Sacco was hired as an assistant coach for the Lowell Lock Monsters, affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. On May 7, 2007, after two years as an assistant, Sacco was named head coach of the Colorado Avalanche's new AHL franchise, the Lake Erie Monsters. Sacco then led the Monsters for the next two seasons and while recording somewhat unimpressive season's numbers with limited resources was credited with helping development of younger players to the NHL.

Sacco is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. As of 2011, its population was 582.

Geography

Located in the central-eastern area of Cilento and near the Alburni mountain range, the municipality borders with Corleto Monforte, Laurino, Piaggine, Roscigno and Teggiano. It has no hamlets (frazioni). The town is located near the spring of the river Sammaro.

Sacco (river)

The Sacco is a river of central Italy, a right tributary of the Liri.

The river is formed by the confluence of two streams of the Monti Simbruini in the Apennines of Abruzzo. It flows towards south-east for a total of 87 kilometres (54 mi), crossing Ciociaria between the mountain ranges of the Ernici to the north-east, and of the Lepini to the south-west. It flows into the Liri in Isoletta di Arce, in the Lazio.

The Sacco's main tributaries are the Cosa and the Alabro.

In the Frosinone area it is known also the Tolero, from its ancient name Tolerus or Trerus.

The Sacco river valley is a vast territory between the provinces of Rome and Frosinone in the central-southern Italy. The intensive exploitation that for decades affected of this valley due to no-scruple companies and crooked public administration offices, produced an unprecedented environmental and social disaster.
