Joe Roberts

Joe Roberts (February 2, 1871 – October 28, 1923) was an American comic actor, who appeared in 16 of Buster Keaton's 19 silent short films of the 1920s.

"Big Joe" Roberts, as he was known in vaudeville, toured the country with his first wife, Lillian Stuart Roberts as part of a rowdy act known as Roberts, Hays, and Roberts. Their signature routine was called "The Cowboy, the Swell and the Lady." At this time, in the first decade of the twentieth century, Buster Keaton's father, Joe Keaton, had started a summer Actors' Colony for vaudevillians between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake in Michigan. Roberts became acquainted with the Keaton family as a member of this community.

When Buster Keaton's film apprenticeship years with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle came to an end, and Keaton began making his own shorts in 1920, he asked Roberts to join him. Roberts' hefty 6'3" frame, usually playing a menacing heavy or authority figure, made a striking and amusing contrast to the thin, 5'6" Keaton.

Joe Roberts (musician)

Joe Roberts is an English musician. His single "Sweet Mercy" (1995) performed well on the dance charts, and an album of similar material was produced.

Prior to Roberts starting to record with business and life-partner Melanie Williams, he also had solo hits with "Lover", "Back In My Life" and "Adore" originally by Prince on his Sign “☮” the Times album. Together with Williams, Roberts covered "You Are Everything", previously recorded by The Stylistics and later covered by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.

Joseph "Joe" Roberts (2 September 1900 – 9 March 1984) was an English professional footballer who played as a outside forward in the Football League for Watford, Queens Park Rangers, Halifax Town, Southport, Clapton Orient, Luton Town, Barrow and Cardiff City, in non-League football for Oswestry Town, York City, Dartford and Worcester City and was on the books of Millwall without making a league appearance.

Joseph (Joe) Roberts (born May 18, 1936) is an American former professional basketball player. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Roberts played for Ohio State University's 1960 NCAA champions, and later played in the NBA for the Syracuse Nationals before going into coaching. Roberts also played with Hall-of-Famers Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, and Bobby Knight. Coach Fred Taylor also was a Hall-of-Famer for Ohio State.

Basketball career

He starred at Columbus East High School under coach Jackie Moore as a 6'6", 220-lb forward. Future OSU teammate Mel Nowell also starred for Columbus East. Roberts ended up at Ohio State when schools like Georgia Tech and Ohio University advised they had curfew rules for blacks like Roberts. The Buckeyes had few black players at that time, but coaches Floyd Stahl and Fred Taylor made him feel welcome.

Roberts, fellow senior Dick Furry, and Larry Siegfried were returnees that were joined by super sophomores Lucas, Havlicek, and Nowell in 1960. That team lost just three games, one to Utah and star center Billy McGill, one to Adolph Rupp's Kentucky team, where Roberts and Nowell endured racial taunts, and one to Indiana after the Buckeyes had won the Big Ten title. Roberts was a senior co-captain who provided veteran leadership to the sophomore stars on that team.
