Joe Carter

Joseph Christopher Carter (born March 7, 1960) is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder and first baseman from 1983 to 1998. Carter is most famous for hitting a walk-off home run to win the 1993 World Series for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Career

College

Joe Carter attended Wichita State University, leaving after his junior year. He was named The Sporting News magazine's College Player of the Year in 1981. In the 1981 draft, the Cubs chose him with the second pick of the first round.

Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians

Carter first reached the majors in 1983 with the Chicago Cubs, but was traded to the Cleveland Indians the following year, where he blossomed into a star. Carter emerged as a prolific power hitter, hitting as many as 35 home runs in a season and regularly driving in 100 or more runs. He usually hit nearly as many doubles as he did homers, and would get respectable numbers of triples in many years too. He was also a very good baserunner, stealing 20-30 bases a year with a high rate of success; in 1987, Carter became a rare member of the single-season 30–30 club for home runs/stolen bases.

Joseph Thomas Carter (born June 23, 1962) is a former American football running back in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played college football at Alabama.

Joe Carter (English footballer)

Joseph Henry Carter (27 July 1899 – 7 January 1977) was an English footballer who played at inside-forward. He won three England caps, scoring four goals. Carter won an FA Cup winner's medal with West Bromwich Albion in 1931, also helping the team win promotion to Division One in the same season. In September 1931 he became the first ever Albion player to be sent off at The Hawthorns. He played in the 1935 FA Cup Final when Albion finished as runners-up to Sheffield Wednesday. He died of dehydration in 1977.

Sara Dougherty Carter (July 21, 1898 – January 8, 1979) was an American country music musician, singer, and songwriter. Remembered mostly for her deep, distinctive, mature singing voice, she was the lead singer on most of the recordings of the historic Carter Family act in the 1920s and 1930s. In her earliest recordings her voice was pitched very high.

Life and career

Born in Copper Creek, Virginia, the daughter of William Sevier Dougherty and Nancy Elizabeth Kilgore, she married A. P. Carter on June 18, 1915, but they were later divorced in 1939. They had three children: Gladys (Mrs. Millard), Janette, and Joe.

In 1927, she and A.P. began performing as the Carter Family, perhaps the first commercial rural country music group. They were joined by her cousin, Maybelle, who was married to A.P.'s brother, Ezra Carter. Later, Sara married Coy Bayes, A.P.'s first cousin, and moved to California in 1943, and the original group disbanded. In the late 1940s, Maybelle began performing with her daughters Helen, June, and Anita as The Carter Sisters (the act was renamed The Carter Family during the 1960s).

Joe Carter (November 6, 1927 – June 15, 2001) was an American blues guitarist and singer, formerly active on the Chicago blues scene.

Biography

Born Joseph J. Carter in Midland, Georgia, he was taught to play guitar by Lee Willis as a youngster in Georgia. He moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1952, where he met Muddy Waters. He formed his first band with Otis "Big Smokey" Smothers on guitar and Lester Davenport on harmonica, though he never recorded with this band. He was offered a recording contract with Cobra Records, but turned it down because he made more money with his club gigs. In the 1950s he performed frequently at the 708 Club, one of the premier blues clubs on Chicago's south side, often billed as Joe "Elmore James, Jr." Carter because of his mastery of the Elmore James slide guitar style.

Carter worked at the Hormel Meat Packing plant for many years when he was inactive as a musician.

Carter did not begin recording until 1976, when his debut album was issued on Barrelhouse Records. In the late 1980s he performed occasionally at the Lilly's nightclub on Chicago's north side, backed by the band The Ice Cream Men. By the early 1990s he had developed throat cancer and was forced to curtail his career.
