Joe Bowman

Joseph Emil Bowman (June 17, 1910 – November 22, 1990) was pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1932 through 1945. Bowman batted left-handed and threw right-handed.

A starter most of his career, Bowman also filled various relief roles coming out from the bullpen, as a closer or a middle reliever, and as a set-up man as well. He reached the majors in 1932 with the Philaldelphia Athletics, spending one year with them before moving to the New York Giants (1934), Philadelphia Phillies (1935–37), Pittsburgh Pirates (1937–41), Boston Red Sox (1944–45) and Cincinnati Reds (1945). He was one of two 20-game losers with the last-place 1936 Phillies, but won 39 games in five seasons for Pittsburgh. He went 12–8 with Boston in 1944 and won 11 games for Cincinnati in 1945, his last major league season. Often used as a pinch hitter, he hit .333 in 1938 and .344 in 1939.

In an 11-season career, Bowman posted a 77–96 record with a 4.40 ERA and 11 saves in 298 appearances, including 184 starts, 74 complete games, five shutouts, and 1465 ⅔ innings pitched. As a hitter, he collected a .221 batting average (141-for-639) with two home runs and 75 RBI in 430 games.

Joe Bowman (marksman)

Joe Bowman, born Joseph Lee Bowman (April 12, 1925 – June 29, 2009), was a Houston bootmaker and marksman called "The Straight Shooter", considered to have been a guardian of Texas and western frontier culture. Shortly after his death, Bowman was inducted posthumously into the Texas Heroes Hall of Honor at the Frontier Times Museum in Bandera.

Early years

Bowman was born to parents Mark McKinley Bowman, Sr. and Margaret Clark Bowman, in Johnson City in East Tennessee. He was reared in Asheville, in western North Carolina, where he and his brother, Mark, Jr., watched Tom Mix and Gene Autry films as boys. When he was twelve in 1937, Bowman moved with his parents to Houston, where his father procured work as an auto mechanic and as a place of potential relief for young Mark’s asthma. Young Bowman learned to shoot flies off the garbage can with BB guns. At the age of fifteen, he began apprenticeships with Roy Smith Boots and Palace Boots in downtown Houston. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America during his formative years in Houston and attained their highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Joe Bowman (footballer)

Joseph "Joe" Bowman (7 November 1902−August 1941) was an English footballer born in Evenwood, County Durham who played as a left back for Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield. He played for Doncaster in the Third Division North between 1924 and 1932 and made 201 appearances in all competitions.

Bowman left to play for Chesterfield in League Division 2 in the 1931-32 season, making his debut at Tottenham Hotspur in a 3−3 draw on 13 February 1932. He appeared 31 times in total, playing his last first team game against Stoke City on 15 April 1933.

After Chesterfield, he moved into non-league football including playing for Broad Oaks Works. He died in 1941 at 38 years of age.
