Jintan District
Jintan District is a district under the administration of Changzhou in the Jiangsu province of the People's Republic of China. The district has been dubbed as the “Golden Jug” in Chinese since 688 A.D. It has a long history of human civilization, tracing back to the Western Zhou Dynasty. The city has been honored as the provincial garden city since 2006.
Location
Jintan District is located in Jiangsu province in southern China. Jintan is surrounded by Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing. The name Jintan derives from the name of Jinshan county. On November 10, 1993, Jintan was reclassified from a county and officially became a city. In 1987, the County comprised 22 towns, with the county government located in Jincheng town. The county was part of Changzhou, Jiangsu province. Jintan has a total area of 976.7 square kilometers (301.65 sq mi). The total land area is 781.27 square kilometers (301.65 sq mi), and water covers an area of 194.22 square kilometers (74.99 sq mi). Because of these proportions, Jintan is commonly known as the "two mountain two water six points field." As of 2010, it has a permanent resident population of 552,047. Jintan is a 2-3 hour bus ride from Shanghai.
Jintan (Japanese medicine)
Jintan is the patented name of a popular Japanese medicine/candy developed by Morishita Hiroshi (1869-1943) and sold from the early twentieth century to today. Originally marketed as a cure-all for a number of ailments, Jintan is today thought of as a breath freshener only.
Morishita Hiroshi was the eldest son of a priest at the Nunakuma-Shrine (沼名前神社, Numakuma jinja) in Fukuyama (Hiroshima prefecture). After his father died, Morishita went to Osaka and started to develop pharmaceutical products. He was also a pioneer of Japanese advertising.
Jintan has about 16 ingredients including cinnamon, mint, cumin, clove, and Fructus Amomi. The silver coated pellet-like pills were advertised from 1904 through the end of World War II. They were sold throughout Asia. The name Jintan combines the Confucian term jin (humaneness, benevolence) with the Daoist term tan (cinnabar, pills containing cinnabar, pills) evoking the notion of longevity and health.
Packaging
During the Russo-Japanese War it was re-designed as a Meiji period soldier in court dress with bicorne.
