Jimmy White

James Warren "Jimmy" White, MBE (born 2 May 1962) is an English professional snooker player. Nicknamed "The Whirlwind" because of his fluid, attacking style of play and popularly referred to as the "People's Champion", White is a six times World Championship finalist, the 1980 World Amateur Champion, 2009 Six-red World Champion, 2010 World Seniors Champion and 1984 World Doubles champion with Alex Higgins.

White's non-world championship achievements include the UK Championship, the Masters and the Nations Cup. A two times winner of both the World Cup and the British Open White was also the first left-handed player, and second player overall, to record a maximum break at the World Championship.

Early life

White was born in Streathbourne Road, Tooting, London, England, and studied at Hillcroft Comprehensive (later renamed Ernest Bevin College). He never achieved academic success, as he was often truant from school from the age of eight or nine, spending more and more time at "Zans", Ted Zanoncelli's snooker hall. The club was affectionately known as "Zans" and after Ted's death in 1978 it was handed down to his daughter. It was around this time that White met Tony Meo with whom he would compete in money matches in many venues. His natural aptitude for snooker, perhaps only bettered by Ronnie O'Sullivan led to a successful amateur career. After winning the English Amateur Championship in 1979, a year later he became the youngest ever winner of the World Amateur Snooker Championship, aged 18, a record since surpassed by Ian Preece and Hossein Vafaei.

Jimmy White was an Irish soccer player during the 1920s and 1930s.

Bohemians

White was a number 9 during this era in the League of Ireland and spent most of his career with Bohemians whom he joined in 1923. Jimmy made his way up from Bohs "C" team to make his debut in August 1926 against Fordsons. True to form, it was a scoring debut as he netted in a 2-1 win for Bohs. He was part of the All-Conquering Bohemian team of 1927/28 who won every trophy on offer that season - League of Ireland, FAI Cup, League of Ireland Shield and Leinster Senior Cup. He scored 11 goals in 15 league games that season and a total of 24 strikes in 29 appearances in all competitions. Jimmy also scored in that season's FAI Cup Final on St. Patrick's Day as Bohs beat Drumcondra 2-1 at Dalymount Park. In 1931/32 season, White was given the honour of club captain.

Jimmy scored 69 goals in 157 competitive appearances for Bohs and is currently fifth on their all-time FAI Cup goalscoring list with 13 goals in that competition. After he retired from football, he stayed involved with Bohs and served on their Management Committee from 1945–48, 1949–60, 1961–64 and had a spell as Assistant Honorary Treasurer from 1964-69.

Jimmy White (footballer, born 1942)

James "Jimmy" White (born 13 June 1942 in Parkstone) is an English former professional association football player. He played for Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Gillingham and Cambridge United between 1958 and 1972. His debut for Bournemouth against Port Vale on 30 April 1958 made him Bournemouth's youngest player at age 15 years and 321 days, a record that still stands.

Great Train Robbery (1963)

The Great Train Robbery was the robbery of substantial sums of money from a Royal Mail train heading between Glasgow and London in the early hours of Thursday 8 August 1963 at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England.

After tampering with line signals, a 15-strong gang of robbers led by Bruce Reynolds attacked the train. Other gang members included Gordon Goody, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Roy James, John Daly, Jimmy White, Ronnie Biggs, Tommy Wisbey, Jim Hussey, Bob Welch and Roger Cordrey as well as three men known only as numbers '1', '2' and '3'. A 16th man, an unnamed retired train driver, was also present at the time of robbery.

With careful planning based on inside information from an individual known as 'The Ulsterman' (named as Patrick McKenna in 2014), the robbers got away with over £2.6 million (equivalent to £48.6 million today). The bulk of the stolen money was never recovered. Though the gang did not use any firearms, Jack Mills, the train driver, was beaten over the head with a metal bar. Mills' injuries were severe enough to end his career.

James White (Scottish footballer)

James White (21 August 1899 – August 1983), also known as Jimmy White or Tec White, is a former Scottish footballer who spent most of his career playing for Fall River Marksmen in the American Soccer League. He was born in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Playing career

In 1920, White signed with Albion Rovers of the Scottish League. He helped Albion reach the final of the 1920 Scottish Cup where they lost to Kilmarnock. He spent two season with Albion before joining Maidstone United of the English Southern League in 1923. After one season with Maidstone, White transferred to Motherwell.

White was one of several players who were recruited from the Scottish League by Sam Mark to play for Fall River Marksmen. Others included Tommy Martin, also from Motherwell, Charlie McGill from Third Lanark and wing-half Bill McPherson from Beith. These players would become the backbone of the a very successful Marksmen team during the 1920s and early 1930s. In later seasons his team mates also included, among others, Billy Gonsalves, Bert Patenaude, Werner Nilsen and Alex McNab.
