Jimmy Kennedy

Jimmy Kennedy OBE (20 July 1902 – 6 April 1984) was an Northern Irish songwriter, predominantly a lyricist, putting words to existing music such as "Teddy Bears' Picnic" and "My Prayer", or co-writing with the composers Michael Carr, Wilhelm Grosz (aka Hugh Williams) and Nat Simon, among others.

Early life

Kennedy was born near Omagh, in Northern Ireland. His father, Joseph Hamilton Kennedy, was a policeman in the Royal Irish Constabulary, which existed before the Partition of Ireland.

While growing up in Coagh, Kennedy wrote several songs and poems. He was inspired by local surroundings—the view of the Ballinderry river, the local Springhill house and the plentiful chestnut trees on his family's property, as evidenced in his poem chestnut trees. Kennedy later moved to Portstewart, a seaside resort.

Kennedy graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, before teaching in England. Kennedy was accepted into the Colonial Service, as a civil servant, in 1927.

Music career

While awaiting a Colonial Service posting to the colony of Nigeria, Kennedy embarked on a career in songwriting by joining the staff of Bert Feldman, a music publisher based in London's Tin Pan Alley.

Jimmy Kennedy (hurler born 1926)

Jimmy Kennedy (1926–2007) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at various times with his local clubs Kiladangan in Tipperary and UCD in Dublin. Kennedy also played with the Tipperary and Dublin senior inter-county teams from 1946 until 1951.

Biography

Jimmy Kennedy was born in Kildangan, County Tipperary in 1926. He was educated at the local national school and later attended St. Flannans College in Ennis, County Clare. Here his hurling skills were fully developed and he won Harty Cup and All-Ireland colleges titles in 1944. Kennedy capped off a memorable year with membership of the victorious Munster colleges inter-provincial team.

Kennedy subsequently studied agricultural science at University College Dublin. He achieved his degree in the late 1940s and took up employment with Minch Norton Maltings in Nenagh in 1950. He moved to the firm's Goresbridge depot as manager in 1961 before transferring to the Guinness Maltings in Midleton in 1964 where he stayed for seven years.

Jimmy Kennedy (wrestler)

Jimmy Kennedy (born July 7, 1988) of Waukegan, Illinois is an American wrestler for New York Athletic Club who represented the United States at the 2014 World Wrestling Championships.

High school

Kennedy attended Grant Community High School in Fox Lake, Illinois from 2002-2006. Kennedy was a four time placewinner in the Illinois state tournament, winning state titles in 2004 and 2006, and finishing top 3 every year. Kennedy finished his high school career with a 187-3 record (98.4% winning percentage), and won the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2006 as the best high school wrestler in Illinois.

College

At The University of Illinois, Kennedy was a four time NCAA qualifier and three time NCAA player, including finishing fourth in 2008 and fifth in both 2009 and 2011. Kennedy finished his college career with 119 wins against only 24 losses, for a winning percentage of 83%.

International

In 2012, Kennedy represented the United States at the 2012 University World Champsionships, where he finished in 7th place with a 1-1 record. Kennedy has since gone on to success at the Senior level, making three freestyle national teams (top 3 in the World Team/Olympic trials).

Jimmy Kennedy (Cork hurler)

Jimmy "Major" Kennedy (born 1890) was an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward for the Cork senior team.

Kennedy made his first appearance for the team during the 1912 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen for the following fifteen seasons. During that time he won one All-Ireland medal and four Munster medals. In 1919 Kennedy captained the team to the All-Ireland title.

At club level Kennedy was a one-time county championship medalist with Carrigtwphill.

Playing career

Club

Kennedy played his club hurling with his local club in Carrigtwohill club. He won a senior county championship winners' medal with 'Carrig' in 1918. This remains the club's only senior county title.

Inter-county

Kennedy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork senior hurling team in 1912. That year he won his first Munster winners' medal following a victory over Tipperary in the provincial final. Because of a delay in the championship the 5-1 to 3-1 Munster final victory allowed Cork to advance to the All-Ireland final. Arch-rivals Kilkenny provided the opposition in that game. Sim Walton was the goal-scoring hero as 'the Cats' secured a narroiw 2-1 to 1-3 victory and Kennedy ended up on the losing side.

Jimmy Kennedy (footballer)

James John 'Jimmy' Kennedy (8 May 1883 – 20 July 1947) was a Scottish professional footballer who played for Celtic, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds City, Stockport County, Tottenham Hotspur, Swindon Town, Norwich City, Watford and Gillingham.

Football career

Kennedy played for Celtic and Brighton & Hove Albion before joining Leeds City in 1906. The defender played in 58 matches and scored once between 1906–08 for the Yorkshire club. He moved to Stockport County where he played a further 18 matches before joining Tottenham Hotspur. Kennedy featured in 13 matches and scored once in his career at White Hart Lane, which was followed by short spells at Swindon Town and Norwich City. He then joined Watford, captaining them to the Southern League title in 1914–15 after his predecessor Alex Stewart enlisted for military service. Upon the resumption of peacetime football in 1919, Kennedy finished his career at Gillingham.
