Jimmy Johnson (born February 4, 1943, Sheffield, Alabama) is a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section who was attached to FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for a period in the 1960s. In 1969, with the backing of Atlantic Records executive Jerry Wexler, Johnson became co-founder, along with drummer Roger Hawkins, bassist David Hood, and keyboardist Barry Beckett, of Muscle Shoals Sound Studio located at first on 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield, Alabama and at a second site on 1000 Alabama Avenue also in Sheffield, Alabama. Johnson operated variously as a record producer or guitarist. He has performed with Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin and engineered three tracks on The Rolling Stones' album, Sticky Fingers.
Jimmy Johnson (born 1956) is an American bass guitarist best known for his work with James Taylor, Allan Holdsworth and Flim & the BB's. Raised in a rich musical environment, his father was a 47-year member of the Minnesota Orchestra's bass section, his mother a piano teacher and accompanist, and his brother Gordon is also a professional bassist.
In 1976, Johnson worked with Alembic and GHS to create one of the first 5-string bass guitars with a low B string. Living in the Los Angeles area since 1979, Johnson continues to record and tour with singer-songwriter James Taylor as well as guitarist Allan Holdsworth, and is frequently heard with various groups at The Baked Potato jazz club in Studio City, California.
