James "Jimmy" Hill Galt (11 August 1885 – 17 November 1935) was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as a left half for Rangers and Everton.
Galt played with Rangers for eight years between 1906 and 1914. He made 206 appearances and scored five goals for the club. During his time at Ibrox he won three Scottish league championships, two Glasgow Cups and three Charity Cups. He also won the Scottish National Exhibition Tournament in 1908.
Galt swapped Glasgow for Merseyside in 1914 and joined Everton. He made thirty-six appearances for the Toffees and scored four goals. But left after only one season, despite captaining them to the Old First Division title, to join Third Lanark.
Galt won his two Scotland caps in May 1908. He scored on his second appearance, against Ireland on 14 May. Galt also played and scored in one unofficial wartime international, against England on 13 May 1916.
Galt served with Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War as a Second Lieutenant. Galt was wounded in action, suffering severe shell-shock, which meant that he did not resume his football career after the war ended. After retiring from football he ran a series of Billiard Halls with ex-Rangers teammate Jimmy Gordon.
Galt toys is an international educational toy company. It is responsible for a number of high profile games and its designs by Ken Garland are often cited as classics.
In 1836 Ayrshire-born James Galt set up James Galt & Co. Ltd, which traded in Manchester as educational stockists. While the original product line consisted of items like desks and blackboards, the company expanded into publishing and printing, and increased its influence on the education sector. In 1957, the company moved its headquarters to Cheadle in Cheshire.
In 1961 the Galt toys Division was formed and opened its first toy shop on Carnaby Street, London. In addition to toys, the company's memorable items in recent events have included Royal Wedding knitting patterns.
In 1961 the company approached Ken Garland and Associates (KGA) to act as design associates. Garland was tasked with building an image for the company from scratch. He also inadvertently changed the name of the company to Galt toys He also began designing toys for Galt, creating everything from wooden toys to board games. In a twenty-year association with KGA, Galt toys managed to produce some of the most iconic toys of the era, including Connect and Anymals.
