Jim Wright

James Claude Wright, Jr. (December 22, 1922 – May 6, 2015), usually known as Jim Wright, was a Democratic U.S. Congressman from Texas who served 34 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and was the Speaker of the House from 1987 to 1989. Wright resigned from the House in 1989 because of a scandal.

Early life

Wright was born in Fort Worth, the son of Marie (Lyster) and James Claude Wright. Because his father was a traveling salesman, Wright and his two sisters were reared in numerous communities in Texas and Oklahoma. He mostly attended Fort Worth and Dallas public schools, eventually graduating from Oak Cliff High School, then studied at Weatherford College in his mother's hometown of Weatherford, the county seat of Parker County west of Fort Worth, and then at the University of Texas at Austin, but he never received a bachelor's degree.

In December 1941, Wright enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces, and after training, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Corps in 1942. He trained as a bombardier and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross flying during combat in B-24 Liberators with the 530th Bomb Squadron, 380th Bomb Group (Heavy) in the South Pacific during World War II. His retelling of his wartime exploits is contained in his 2005 book The Flying Circus: Pacific War—1943—As Seen through A Bombsight.

Jim Wright (American football coach)

Jim Wright (born December 12, 1935) is a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Wichita State University from 1974 to 1978, compiling a record of 17–37–1. Wright was born on December 12, 1935 in Edinburg, Texas. He played college football as a quarterback at Texas A&M University from 1954 to 1956. Prior to becoming head coach at Wichita State, Wright worked as an assistant football coach at Texas Tech University from 1961 to 1966, at Mississippi State University from 1967 to 1969, and at the University of Tennessee from 1970 to 1973.

James Leon Wright (born March 3, 1955 in St. Joseph, Missouri) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He played parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball for the Kansas City Royals, appeaaring in 17 games during the 1981 Kansas City Royals season and seven games during the 1982 Kansas City Royals season. He is the current Colorado Rockies bullpen coach, a position he has held since 2009. He also served as the team's pitching coach in 2002.

James Clifton Wright (born December 21, 1950) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He played two seasons in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox in 1978-79. Wright was born in Reed City, Michigan.

Career

Wright was drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft. He spent several years working his way up through their minor league organization, primarily as a starting pitcher. His breakthrough came in 1977 with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, where he went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA.

Wright made the Red Sox out of spring training in 1978 and went on to pitch 3 shutouts in 24 games (16 of them starts) as a rookie. He posted an 8-4 win–loss record with an ERA of 3.57 by the end of the season. As a fielder, Wright committed one error in 17 total chances.

Wright pitched six shutout innings in his first start of 1979. However, it wound up as his only start of the year, as he was moved to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for rookie Chuck Rainey. He did not pitch at all after an arm injury in early June, playing his final game on June 6. He finished with a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 5.09. He also committed no errors that season.
