Jim Rogers

James Beeland "Jim" Rogers, Jr. (born October 19, 1942) is an American businessman, investor and author. He is currently based in Singapore. Rogers is the Chairman of Rogers Holdings and Beeland Interests, Inc. He was the co-founder of the Quantum Fund and creator of the Rogers International Commodities Index (RICI).

Rogers does not consider himself a member of any school of economic thought, but has acknowledged that his views best fit the label of Austrian School of economics.

Early life

Rogers was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Demopolis, Alabama.

Education

In 1964, Rogers graduated with a bachelor's degree in History from Yale University. He got his first job on Wall Street, at Dominick & Dominick.

In 1966, Rogers then acquired a second BA degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, as a member of Balliol College. He was the coxswain in 1966 for Oxford's victory in The Boat Race.

Business and investment career

In 1964, Rogers joined Dominick & Dominick LLC on Wall Street, where he first learned about stocks and bonds.

Jim Rogers (politician)

Jim Rogers also known as The People's Lawyer (born September 10, 1955) is a city councilmember for the city of Richmond, California. He was first elected in 2002; his current term expires in January 2015. He is a Democrat. From 1994 to 1998 he was a member of the board of supervisors in Contra Costa County, California.

History

Origins

Rogers is native of Ohio. He is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis School of Law (King Hall).

Rogers has been a lawyer since 1980. He was well known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as "the People's Lawyer," thanks to radio and television commercials which he started in the early 1980s and ran throughout the 1990s.

Rogers was reported to have a large number of unhappy customers, being sued by more than a dozen people citing malpractice, fraud or negligence. Rogers has defended himself by saying "If you have ten times as many cases as somebody, you have ten times as many unhappy people... It's often overlooked that you also have ten times as many happy people". An article in the New York University Law Review described Rogers' firm as a busy place at the height of its business, with around 1500 open cases at any time. The article cited Rogers' practice as a typical example of a "settlement mill," where turnover of work was swift with noticeably little 'lawyering'.

Jim Rogers (Oklahoma politician)

Jimmie Hugh Rogers, Sr. (March 25, 1935 – November 11, 2014) was an American perennial political candidate. He ran for various offices and in 2010 was the Democratic Party nominee for the United States Senate in Oklahoma in a race against incumbent Senator Tom Coburn.

Rogers was noted for being highly protective of his privacy. He rarely spoke to the media and repeatedly declined to participate in debates. While revealing that his top priorities as a candidate were to stop the outsourcing of jobs overseas and rein in the national debt, he did not generally make his political positions known. While citing his experience as a professor at several different universities, Rogers often refused to publicly disclose which ones he taught at. He would later disclose that Rogers said he taught at several colleges, including Seminole State College, Connors State College and Langston University. Spokeswomen at all three schools confirmed he had taught there.

Jim Rogers (baseball)

James F. "Jim" Rogers (April 9, 1872 – January 21, 1900) was an American Major League Baseball player and manager born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was an infielder for two different Major League Baseball teams, the 1896 Washington Senators and the 1896 – 1897 Louisville Colonels.

Career

Jim began his major league career with the 1896 Washington Senators of the National League, and split time between second base and third, hitting .279, driving in 30 runs, in 38 games played. On July 3 of that year, the Senators traded him, along with Jack Crooks and $1000 to the Louisville Colonels, also of the National League, for John O'Brien.

He hit .259 for Louisville that season, splitting his playing time at first base and second base. The following season, his last in the Majors, he began the season as player-manager, but was released on June 16, after 44 games and a 17–24 record. He signed the following day with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but did not play.

Post-career

Rogers died at the age of 27 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and is interred at St. Michael's Cemetery in nearby Stratford.
