Jim Hunt

James Baxter "Jim" Hunt, Jr. (born May 16, 1937) is an American politician who was the 69th and 71st Governor of North Carolina (1977–1985, and 1993–2001). He is the longest-serving governor in the state's history. Hunt is tied for the fourth-longest gubernatorial tenure in post-Constitutional U.S. history at 5,840 days.

Early life

Hunt was born in Greensboro, North Carolina and raised in Wilson, North Carolina.

He is a graduate of North Carolina State College, now known as North Carolina State University, with a B.S. in agricultural education and a M.S. in agricultural economics. During his undergraduate career, Hunt was involved in Student Government. He was the second student to serve two terms as Student Body President of NC State. In 1964, he received a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. He went on to serve as the President of the Young Democratic Clubs of North Carolina, now known as the Young Democrats of North Carolina.

Political career

Hunt is the only Governor of North Carolina to have been elected to four terms. He was first elected Governor in 1976 over Republican David Flaherty and was re-elected in 1980, defeating I. Beverly Lake. He previously served a term as the 27th Lieutenant Governor (1973–1977) under Republican Governor James Holshouser. Hunt supported a constitutional change during his first term that allowed him to be the first North Carolina governor to run for a second consecutive term.

Jim Hunt (coach)

Jim Hunt is the renowned former head cross-country and track and field coach at Humboldt State University, where he coached from 1965 until his retirement in 2008. His cross-country team won the 1980 NCAA Division II National Championships and his teams regularly finished in the top ten at NCAA Nationals, producing 64 All-Americans and eleven National Champions. He coached numerous distance greats including Gary Tuttle, Bill Scobey, Danny Grimes, Chuck Smead and 1984 US Olympic marathon trials winner Mark Conover, his most accomplished protégé. Hunt is well respected nationally as a coach and innovator of new training methods. He continues coaching to this day, and has produced a video "Training the Neurological Aspects of Distance Running" used by coaches across the United States.

Education

Hunt graduated from Wayne State University in Michigan in 1949. He later earned his master’s degree from Chico State University.

Career

Hunt coached at Humboldt State University from 1966 until retiring in 2008. He coached the UC Davis Aggie men’s cross country program from 1989 to 1992, and returned for another stint in 2000. He left UC Davis to coach the track and cross country programs at nearby Sierra College in Rocklin, California, before returning to UC Davis, where he is currently an assistant coach. Hunt has also served as the USA Track & Field Men’s Development distance and middle distance coach from 1981 to 1992. He was a coach at the US West Team Sports Festival in 1981. He is currently the international director of distance running and race walking for Special Olympics International. In July 2000, Hunt served as the coordinator of the Masters, Disabled and Special Olympic Events at the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento, California. He is currently the cross country coach at UC Davis.

Jim Hunt (columnist)

Jim "Shaky" Hunt (9 November 1926 – 9 March 2006) was a Canadian sports columnist who spent over 50 years as a journalist and covered the biggest events in sports including the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, all of golf's majors and the 1972 Canada-Russia Summit Series. Hunt was known as "Shaky" thanks to his intramural goaltending career at the University of Western Ontario, where he was part of the school's first journalism graduating class, in 1948. Jim Hunt was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Hunt died aged 79 after suffering a heart attack. and is remembered as a "character who had a loud and distinctive voice and loved telling good stories". Hunt left Caroline, his wife of 54 years, daughters Kathryn, and Cally, and sons Rod and Andrew. He also left two brothers, Don and Jack, and six grandchildren, Ben, Billy, Cally, Katie, Aiden and Ella.

Career

Born and raised in Sarnia, Ontario, Hunt began his 50-plus years in journalism when he joined the Toronto Daily Star in 1948, working first as a city news reporter. He was working in the Queen's Park bureau before moving to sports in 1952.
