Jim Hale

James Alfred Hale (1916-1992) was an Australian rugby league footballer of the 1940s.

Career

Jim Hale was graded with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1940 and switched mid-season to join the St George Dragons with whom he played eight seasons between 1940-1947. He is remembered as the second-row forward in the St George side that was defeated in the 1946 Grand Final by Balmain Tigers. At the end of the game, Jim Hale and his ex team-mate Herb Gilbert, Jr. were involved in a brawl when a spectator jumped on to the Sydney Cricket Ground playing area and punched Hale. The incident almost caused a riot amongst rival players and fans and resulted in a number of arrests by police. Jim Hale, like his father Percy (1887-1953), was an amateur heavy-weight boxer, and the brawl between him and Gilbert was a huge talking point in the Sydney press for days afterward.

After retiring from Sydney first grade football, Jim Hale captain coached the Boorowa Rovers Rugby League Club in 1948-1949.

Jim Hale died on 28 December 1992, aged 76.

Jim (comics)

Jim is a comic book series by Jim Woodring. It began in 1980 as a self-published zine and was picked up by Fantagraphics Books in 1986 after cartoonist Gil Kane introduced Woodring to Fantagraphics co-owner Gary Groth. The publisher released four magazine-sized black-and-white issues starting in September 1987. A comic book-sized continuation, Jim Volume II, with some color, began in 1993 and ran for six issues until 1996.

Jim, which Woodring described as an "autojournal", contained comics on a variety of subjects, many based on dreams, as well as surreal drawings and free-form text which resembled Jimantha automatic writing. Besides dreams, the work drew on Woodring's childhood experiences, hallucinations, past alcoholism, and Hindu beliefs. It also included stories of recurring Woodring characters such as Pulque (the embodiment of drunkenness), boyhood friends Chip and Monk, and, in Volume II, his signature creation Frank.

Content

Jim is made up of a variety of short comics, text pieces, and artwork. Most of the works are short comics based on Woodring's dreams. Some of the pieces are surreal parodies of advertisements in the Mad tradition.

Gimel

Gimel is the third letter of the Semitic abjads, including Phoenician Gīml , Hebrew ˈGimel ג, Aramaic Gāmal , Syriac Gāmal ܓ, and Arabic ǧīm ج (in alphabetical order; fifth in spelling order). Its sound value in the original Phoenician and in all derived alphabets, save Arabic, is a voiced velar plosive [ɡ]; in Modern Standard Arabic, it represents has many standards including [ɡ], see below.

In its unattested Proto-Canaanite form, the letter may have been named after a weapon that was either a staff sling or a throwing stick, ultimately deriving from a Proto-Sinaitic glyph based on the hieroglyph below:

Bertrand Russell posits that the letter's form is a conventionalized image of a camel. The letter may be the shape of the walking animal's head, neck, and forelegs. Barry B. Powell, a specialist in the history of writing, states "It is hard to imagine how gimel = "camel" can be derived from the picture of a camel (it may show his hump, or his head and neck!)".

Hale is a ghost town in Carbon County, Utah. The site lies just to the east of Scofield Reservoir, at an elevation of 7598 feet (2316 meters). The reservoir covers the upper part of town. Like the other nearby towns of Scofield and Winter Quarters, Utah, Hale was a coal mining camp.

Hale is the self-titled debut album by OPM Filipino band Hale, released on April 2005 under EMI Philippines.

The album contains the singles Broken Sonnet, the award-winning and well-received The Day You Said Goodnight, Kahit Pa, Kung Wala Ka and Blue Sky, together with Tollgate which can be found in Hale (Special Edition). It was certified Triple Platinum (90, 000 copies sold) on May 2006.
