Jim Davies (cognitive scientist)

Jim Davies is an American cognitive scientist, playwright artist, and author. He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from the State University of New York at Oswego, his masters in psychology and his Ph.D. in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is an associate professor of Cognitive Science at the Institute of Cognitive Science at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario where he is the director of the Science of Imagination Laboratory. His research focuses on visual reasoning, analogy, and imagination.

Biography

Jim Davies was born in Glens Falls, New York. He attended Lake George High School and then majored in philosophy at the State University of New York at Oswego, during which he was an exchange student in Beijing, graduating in 1993. He worked in automated text retrieval at the Los Alamos National Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Thomas before attending graduate school at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his M.S. in psychology in 1997 under the advisement of Dr. Dorrit Billman. He also received his Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in 2004, under the advisement of philosopher of science Nancy J. Nersessian and artificial intelligence researcher Ashok K. Goel. He worked in bioinformatics as a postdoctoral fellow at Queen's University with Dr. Janice Glasgow and is currently an associate professor at the Institute of Cognitive Science at Carleton University.

Jim Davies is the former live and studio guitarist for The Prodigy. He is also a former member of Pitchshifter.

Life and career

Davies first played live with The Prodigy in 1995, including that year's Glastonbury Festival. After a year of touring worldwide with the band, he contributed to their album, The Fat of the Land. This included playing guitar on the subsequent single releases "Firestarter" and "Breathe". In 2010, Total Guitar magazine voted Davies' "Firestarter" riff as one of the top 10 guitar riffs of all time.

Davies joined Pitchshifter in 1998, and played on five tracks on the band's www.pitchshifter.com album. He toured worldwide in support of the album. He went on to co-write the band's next two albums Deviant (MCA Records) and PSI (Sanctuary Records) Deviant charted in the Top 40 in the UK Albums Chart and tours in support of the album included a three month stint on America's 'Ozzfest' alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Incubus and Pantera.

PSI was Davies' last studio recording with Pitchshifter, although they released a partial live album, Bootlegged, Distorted, Remixed and Uploaded, which was recorded at the London Astoria and saw Davies' final performance with the band. Pitchshifter went on an 'indefinite hiatus' in 2002, and although reformed, Davies did not return to play live with the band.
