Jhalod (or Zalod) is a large town of historical and commercial importance and serves as administrative headquarters of Jhalod Taluka in Dahod District, Gujarat State, India. It is situated on the eastern border of the Gujarat State, 5 km far from Kushalgarh Tehsil in Banswara District of Rajasthan State border near the Titodi River. It was one of the original "five mahals" of the Panchmahal District within the Bombay Province during the British Raj in India. It also has a small military fort built by the Marathas locally called "Gadi" in the center of the town. The taluka was made up by joining the territories of Sanjeli State and Jhalod Mahal together .
In the 11th century, a young Parma Rajput tribesman from Dhar settled here. He gave his name to the town. The name of the town is sometimes spelt and pronounced as "Zalod" by the local adivasi (tribal) population. The name "Zalod" came from Zalai Mata temple which is 1 km away from the town.
Jhalod was one of the many towns which took part in the struggle for independence at large. When Gandhiji started his Dandi March, many of the freedom fighters from Jhalod joined him and way back, they brought the salt from Dandi. The main residential area called Mitha Chowk (meaning "Salt Square" in Gujarati language) named after their memoir.
