Jewel is a novel by Bret Lott, and was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection.

Plot introduction

The year is 1943 and life is good for Jewel Hilburn, her husband, Leston, and their five children. Although there's a war on, the Mississippi economy is booming, providing plenty of business for the hardworking family. And even the news that eldest son James has enlisted is mitigated by the fact that Jewel, now pushing 40, is pregnant with one last child. Her joy is slightly clouded, however, when her childhood friend Cathedral arrives at the door with a troubling prophecy: "I say unto you that the baby you be carrying be yo' hardship, be yo' test in this world. This be my prophesying unto you, Miss Jewel."

When the child is finally born, it seems that Cathedral's prediction was empty: the baby appears normal in every way. As the months go by, however, Jewel becomes increasingly afraid that something is wrong with little Brenda Kay—she doesn't cry, she doesn't roll over, she's hardly ever awake. Eventually husband and wife take the baby to the doctor and are informed that she is a "Mongolian Idiot," not expected to live past the age of 2. Jewel angrily rebuffs the doctor's suggestion that they institutionalize Brenda Kay. Instead the Hilburns shoulder the burdens—and discover the unexpected joys—of living with a Down syndrome child.

Novel

A novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story.

The genre has also been described as possessing "a continuous and comprehensive history of about two thousand years". This view sees the novel's origins in Classical Greece and Rome, medieval, early modern romance, and the tradition of the novella. The latter, an Italian word used to describe short stories, supplied the present generic English term in the 18th century. Ian Watt, however, in The Rise of the Novel (1957) suggests that the novel first came into being in the early 18th century,

Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, is frequently cited as the first significant European novelist of the modern era; the first part of Don Quixote was published in 1605.

The romance is a closely related long prose narrative. Walter Scott defined it as "a fictitious narrative in prose or verse; the interest of which turns upon marvellous and uncommon incidents", whereas in the novel "the events are accommodated to the ordinary train of human events and the modern state of society". However, many romances, including the historical romances of Scott,Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, are also frequently called novels, and Scott describes romance as a "kindred term". Romance, as defined here, should not be confused with the genre fiction love romance or romance novel. Other European languages do not distinguish between romance and novel: "a novel is le roman, der Roman, il romanzo."

Moon of Israel (novel)

Moon of Israel is a novel by Rider Haggard, first published in 1918 by John Murray. The novel narrates the events of the Biblical Exodus from Egypt told from the perspective of a scribe named Ana.

Haggard dedicated his novel to Sir Gaston Maspero, a distinguished Egyptologist and director of Cairo Museum.

Adaptation

His novel was the basis of a script by Ladislaus Vajda, for film-director Michael Curtiz in his 1924 Austrian epic known as Die Sklavenkönigin, or "Queen of the Slaves".

Plot

In 1945, Jewel Hilburn (Farrah Fawcett), 39, and her husband Leston (Patrick Bergin), 41, are scratching out a living in rural Mississippi, and caring for their four children: Raylene (Rachel Skarsten), 14; Burton (Kyle Fairlie), 11; Wilman (Max Morrow), 10; and Annie (Alexis Vandermaelen), 3. All Jewel's kids have been mid-wived by her friend and housekeeper, Cathedral (Cicely Tyson). Leston has been making a living pulling out pine stumps, selling them to be made into turpentine as part of the war effort. Cathedral's husband, Nelson (Ardon Bess), and their two sons, Sepulchur and Temple, all work for Leston.

The Hilburns discover that they are going to have another child, and decide it will be their last. Cathedral has a premonition and warns Jewel, prophesizing that the child she will bear will be her hardship and her test in this world but that it is God's way of smiling down on Jewel. Jewel gives birth to a baby girl, whom they name Brenda Kay. The child appears to be fine, but in time it becomes obvious that Brenda Kay isn't like other children. She seems to be developing much more slowly. Even at six months old, she lies very still, where other children her age are able to roll over.

Jewell (automobile)

The Jewel Motor Car Company of Massillon, Ohio (formerly the Forest City Motor Company) manufactured the Jewel automobile from 1906 to 1909.

History

The Forest City Motor Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1905 and by the end of the year, the company had relocated to 114 Walnut Street in Massillon and had shortened the name of their automobile from Jewell to Jewel. During 1909, the name of the firm was changed to the Jewel Motor Car Company.

The Jewell Model B, a gasoline powered Runabout, was advertised in a national trade magazine in March 1906, as a "perfect" car for US$400. The automobile had 28-inch (710 mm) rubber wheels standard and optional pneumatic tires could be installed for an extra US$50. For another US$25, a top and side curtains were added. The first Jewell automobile was produced with a 8-horsepower and had a 2 cycle, single-cylinder, water-cooled engine. Transmission was a single planetary type with triple positive clutch.

In 1907, the Model D was sold for US$600. It was equipped with exterior a single-cylinder, two-cycle engine with 8-horsepower. The transmission had two speeds, forward and reverse. The car also came with lamps and a storm front and tools.

Jewel (Beni album)

Jewel is Beni's sixth studio album, and third original album under the mononym Beni released through Nayutawave Records. It was released on December 8, 2010.

Background

The album was released only six months after her second album Lovebox. Lovebox managed to get the #1 weekly spot on the Oricon charts. This album however charted at the #11 spot on the Oricon Charts Weekly.

Promotion

The song 2FACE was the ending theme for NTVs program HAPPY Music (ハッピーMUSIC). The song Heaven's Door was the opening theme for the national TV program CDTV. And the song Smile is the theme song for the commercial Home Mate (ホームメイト; Homu Meito).
