Jerome Schottenstein

Ya'akov Meir Hayyim Jerome Schottenstein (Hebrew: ג'רום (יעקב מאיר חיים) שוטנשטיין‎; died March 10, 1992) was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp.

Biography

Jerome Schottenstein was born to a Jewish family, the son of Ephrayim Schottenstein and Anna Schottenstein. He attended the Yeshiva University school for boys. After graduation he founded Schottenstein Stores Corp. Since 1980 he served as member of the university’s Board of Trustees. He contributed several buildings to the university, including the Schottenstein Center on its Wilf Campus in Washington Heights. That facility houses the Schottenstein Theater, Florence and Sol Shenk Synagogue and beit midrash, Philip and Sarah Belz School of Jewish Music, Dr. Lillian Chutick and Dr. Rebecca Chutick Recital Room, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gampel Communications Center.

Family

Jerome Schottenstein married Geraldine Hurwitz, with whom he had four children: Jay, Ann, Susie and Lori.

Value City Arena

The Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center is a multi-purpose arena, located on the campus of Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio, United States. It was the main sports, music, and entertainment arena in the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area until Nationwide Arena opened in 2000. The arena opened in 1998 and is currently the largest by seating capacity in the Big Ten Conference, with 19,049 seats, which is reduced to 18,809 for Ohio State men's basketball games.

It is home to Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball, women's basketball and men's ice hockey teams. Previously, the basketball teams played at St. John Arena, while the ice hockey team played at the OSU Ice Arena. The facility is named for Jerome Schottenstein, of Columbus, late founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. and lead benefactor of the project, while the seating bowl is named for Schottenstein's store Value City Furniture.

Relationship to Nationwide Arena

Prior to July 1, 2010, one of Value City Arena's major event competitors was the downtown Nationwide Arena, which opened in 2000 and is home to the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. In May 2010, the Blue Jackets and OSU signed a one-year, annually renewable, agreement to turn over day-to-day operations and non-athletic event booking of Nationwide Arena to OSU, effective July 1, 2010. This agreement puts both arenas under the same management and makes the facilities sister venues. As part of the March 2012 sale of Nationwide Arena to the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority (FCCFA), the non-profit company Columbus Arena Management was created. The company, created by OSU, the Blue Jackets, the FCCFA and Columbus-based Nationwide Insurance, currently manages the day-to-day operations as well as all event bookings in both arenas.

Jerome

Saint Jerome (/dʒəˈroʊm/; Latin: Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus; Greek: Εὐσέβιος Σωφρόνιος Ἱερώνυμος; c.  347 – 30 September 420) was a priest, confessor, theologian and historian, who also became a Doctor of the Church. He was the son of Eusebius, born at Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia, then part of northeastern Italy. He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate), and his commentaries on the Gospels. His list of writings is extensive. The protégé of Pope Damasus I, who died in December of 384, Jerome was known for his teachings on Christian moral life, especially to those living in cosmopolitan centers such as Rome. In many cases, he focused his attention to the lives of women and identified how a woman devoted to Jesus Christ should live her life. This focus stemmed from his close patron relationships with several prominent female ascetics who were members of affluent senatorial families.

Jerome is a masculine name of Greek origin, derived from the Greek given name Ἱερώνυμος, Hierōnymos, "sacred name"; from ἱερός, hierós, "sacred", and ὂνυμα, ónyma, an alternative form of ὄνομα, ónoma, "name".

It is the name of a prominent Christian saint, Saint Jerome, the translator of the Vulgate.

Jerome ranked among the top 200 names given to boys born in the United States between 1903 and 1985. It has since declined in popularity and was ranked as the 616th most popular name for American boys born in 2008.
