Jerome Hill

Jerome Hill (March 2, 1905 – November 21, 1972) was an American filmmaker and artist. He was educated at Yale, where he drew covers, caricatures and cartoons for campus humor magazine The Yale Record.

His 1950 documentary Grandma Moses, written and narrated by Archibald MacLeish, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject, Two-reel. He won the 1957 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his film Albert Schweitzer.

In addition to making films, he was a painter and composer.

His last film, the autobiographical Film Portrait (1973), was added to the National Film Registry in 2003.

Hill was a stakeholder in Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. He had a chalet built at Sugar Bowl and while living there, paid for and operated "The Magic Carpet", the first aerial tramway on the west coast.

Jerome Hill was an American basketball player who played college basketball for the Gardner–Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. He was named to multiple all-conference teams in his time attending Gardner–Webb University.

Saint Jerome (/dʒəˈroʊm/; Latin: Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus; Greek: Εὐσέβιος Σωφρόνιος Ἱερώνυμος; c.  347 – 30 September 420) was a priest, confessor, theologian and historian, who also became a Doctor of the Church. He was the son of Eusebius, born at Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia, then part of northeastern Italy. He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate), and his commentaries on the Gospels. His list of writings is extensive. The protégé of Pope Damasus I, who died in December of 384, Jerome was known for his teachings on Christian moral life, especially to those living in cosmopolitan centers such as Rome. In many cases, he focused his attention to the lives of women and identified how a woman devoted to Jesus Christ should live her life. This focus stemmed from his close patron relationships with several prominent female ascetics who were members of affluent senatorial families.

It is the name of a prominent Christian saint, Saint Jerome, the translator of the Vulgate.

Jerome ranked among the top 200 names given to boys born in the United States between 1903 and 1985. It has since declined in popularity and was ranked as the 616th most popular name for American boys born in 2008.
