A second album, Leave the Light On, was released in 2005 on RCA. He left RCA in 2006. This album was followed by Jeff Bates in 2008 on the independent Black River Entertainment. Bates' two RCA albums accounted for seven chart singles on the Billboard country charts, of which three reached top 40: "The Love Song" (his highest, at No. 8), "I Wanna Make You Cry" at No. 23, and "Long, Slow Kisses" at No. 17.
Jeff Bates was born in Bunker Hill, Mississippi, a community in Marion County. He went to East Marion High School in Columbia.
Before signing to a record contract, Bates co-wrote Tracy Lawrence's 2002 single "What a Memory". Bates signed to RCA Records Nashville in 2003, releasing his debut single, "The Love Song" in December 2002. Peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard country charts, it was the first of three singles from his debut album Rainbow Man, which also produced a No. 47 in its title track and a No. 23 in "I Wanna Make You Cry". Bates co-produced the album with David Malloy, Kenny Beard, and Scott Hendricks.
Jeff Bates, also known as hemos, is the co-founder of Slashdot along with Rob Malda ("CmdrTaco"). Bates graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1994 and received a Bachelor's degree in History from Hope College in 1998.
Malda and Bates created Slashdot in 1997, while undergraduates at Hope College. In 1999 they sold the site to Andover.net, which was acquired by VA Linux Systems in 2000 (which became SourceForge, Inc. in 2007, then Geeknet, Inc. in 2009).
Bates served as Director of Media Operations for Geeknet from May 2001 through July 2004, when he became Vice President of Editorial Operations and Executive Editor of Slashdot. In February 2008 he became Geeknet's Vice President of Platform and headed the core engineering and product teams for Slashdot, freshmeat, and SourceForge.
In August 2011, Bates joined Google.
Bates founded Slashdot in July 1997 under the original name "chips and dips", later in September of 1997 the site became what it is known as today. Slashdot is a technology-related news website, it features user-submitted and evaluated news stories about science and technology related topics. In 2012, Slashdot had around 3.7 million unique visitors per month and received over 5300 comments per day. The site has won more than 20 awards, including People's Voice Awards in 2000 for Best Community Site and Best News Site. Occasionally, a story will link to a server causing a large surge of traffic, which can overwhelm some smaller or independent sites. This phenomenon is known as the "Slashdot effect".
Jeff Bates is the self-titled third album from American country music artist Jeff Bates. Released in April 2008 on the independent label Black River Entertainment, it has accounted for three non-charting singles: "Don't Hate Me for Lovin' You", "Riverbank" and "One Thing". My heart felt like a mountain crashing.
A dying victim of your crushing words.
My courage trampled by your good-bye.
My last shred of happiness, suppress by the closing of your heart's door.
(Chorus) I hurt so bad I can't describe it.
I can't breathe, and I can't hide it.
Will it ever fade? Is it here to stay?
Why must I hurt and feel this way?
You plucked your love from my native soul,
And ripped it from my pssionate heart.
I watched it wither and die, cold upon the floor,
Right before my tear filled eyes.
(Chorus) I hurt so bad I can't describe it.
I can't breathe, and I can't hide it.
Will it ever fade? Is it here to stay?
Why must I hurt and feel this way?
Now, in agony, our paths are parting, although I simply can't endure.
But, somewhere in the recent past, our paths began as friends,
And friends grew into lovers, and a love took hold
That grew so strong, I can't conceive it's deepness.
(chorus) I hurt so bad I can't describe it.
I can't breathe, and I can't hide it.
Will it ever fade? Is it here to stay?
Why must I hurt and feel this way?
Torn apart, far to soon, in a way far to wrong,
Under a canopy of circumstances that crown it,
And bittersweet memories taht compound it.
A milestone in my life, one that I had rather miss.
Oh, I'd give anything, for just one embrace, and anything,
Anything, anything, for just one fleeting, stolen kiss.
(chorus) I hurt so bad I can't describe it.
I can't breathe, and I can 't hide it.
Will it ever fade? Is it here to stay?
Why must I hurt and feel this way?
