JSAT Corporation

JSAT Corporation (JSAT) is Japanese satellite operator with a fleet of 8 satellites in orbit. According to a 2004 report, JSAT was the fifth largest satellite operator in the world, ranked by 2003 fiscal year revenue. JSAT was the first private-sector satellite communications operator in Japan, beginning its operations following the enactment of Japan's Telecommunications Business Law in 1985. In October 2008 JSAT, was merged with SKY Perfect Communications, Inc., and Space Communications Corporation, resulting in the creation of the SKY Perfect JSAT Group.

JCSAT Satellites

JCSAT-11

On February 6, 2006 JSAT announced it had contracted with International Launch Services (ILS) to launch its JCSAT-11 satellite on a Proton-M. The satellite was based on the Lockheed-Martin A2100 design. Launch occurred at 22:43 GMT, on 5 September 2007, from LC-200/39 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Due to a mulfunction of the second stage of the rocket the spacecraft failed to reach orbit. Instead, the spacecraft and rocket debris impacted about 40 km (25 mi) from the city of Zhezqazghan, in the central Karaganda region of Kazakhstan.

JCSAT-5A

JCSAT-5A, formerly JCSAT-9, is a Japanese telecommunications satellite. It was launched by a Sea Launch Zenit 3SL rocket on the 12 April 2006 from the offshore Ocean Odyssey launch platform. Launch occurred at 23:29:59 GMT. Separation from the launch vehicle occurred at 00:38:02 GMT, and it is now in a geosynchronous orbit.

JCSAT-RA

JCSAT-RA, previously known as JCSAT-12, is a Japanese geostationary communications satellite, which is operated by JSAT Corporation. It was ordered to replace the JCSAT-11 satellite which was lost in a launch failure on a Proton-M/Briz-M rocket in 2007, and is currently used as an on-orbit spare satellite; a role in which it replaced the older JCSAT-R spacecraft, providing a reserve for if one of the company's other satellites fails. It is a 4,000-kilogram (8,800 lb) satellite, which was constructed by Lockheed Martin based on the A2100AX satellite bus, with the same configuration as JCSAT-10 and JCSAT-11. The contract to build JCSAT-12 was awarded on 6 September 2007, the day after JCSAT-11 failed to reach orbit.

It was launched, along with the Australian Optus D3 satellite, by Arianespace. An Ariane 5ECA rocket was used for the launch, which occurred from ELA-3 at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. The launch took place at 22:09 GMT on 21 August 2009, at the start of a 60 minute launch window.
