Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru (/ˈneɪruː, ˈnɛruː/;Hindustani: [ˈdʒəʋaːɦərˈlaːl ˈneːɦru]; 14 November 1889 – 27 May 1964) was the first Prime Minister of India and a central figure in Indian politics before and after independence. He emerged as the paramount leader of the Indian independence movement under the tutelage of Mahatma Gandhi and ruled India from its establishment as an independent nation in 1947 until his death in 1964. He is considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. He was also known as Pandit Nehru due to his roots with Kashmiri Pandit community while many Indian children knew him as "Uncle Nehru" (Chacha Nehru).

The son of Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer and nationalist statesman and Swaroop Rani, Nehru was a graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge and the Inner Temple, where he trained to be a barrister. Upon his return to India, he enrolled at the Allahabad High Court, and took an interest in national politics, which eventually replaced his legal practice. A committed nationalist since his teenage years, he became a rising figure in Indian politics during the upheavals of the 1910s. He became the prominent leader of the left-wing factions of the Indian National Congress during the 1920s, and eventually of the entire Congress, with the tacit approval of his mentor, Gandhi. As Congress President in 1929, Nehru called for complete independence from the British Raj and instigated the Congress's decisive shift towards the left.

Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium (Malayalam: ജവഹര്‍ലാല്‍ നെഹ്‌റു ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ സ്റ്റേഡിയം; locally known as Kaloor International Stadium – Malayalam: കലൂര്‍ ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ സ്റ്റേഡിയം) is a multipurpose international stadium situated in Kochi, Kerala. The stadium has a capacity of 60,500 spectators making it one of the largest stadiums in India. The capacity can be stretched to 75,000 (after installation of bucket seats in top tier of the stadium) which indeed makes it the largest stadium in India currently(though the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Greater Noida Cricket Stadium are coming up with seating capacities of 100,000 each). The stadium was built in 1996 by the Government of Kerala with Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). The stadium is widely touted to be one of the most noisiest cricket stadium in the world due to its distinctive architecture, however it is to be noted here that the stadium was originally built as a football stadium.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium metro station

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is a Delhi Metro station in Delhi, on the Violet Line. As its name suggests, the station serves the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and its surrounding areas. The station opened in time for the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, to be held on the same day at the stadium, on 3 October 2010.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, (also known as Marina Arena) is a multipurpose stadium and has a capacity of 40,000. It hosts football matches and athletic competitions. The complex also houses a multipurpose indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 8000 which hosts volleyball, basketball, table tennis games. The stadium is also used for functions and concerts. The stadium is named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. The stadium earlier hosted cricket Test Matches between 1956 and 1965.

The stadium is located at Sydenhams Road, Park Town behind the Chennai Central suburban railway station and Ripon Building. Tamil Nadu football team which plays in Santosh Trophy and Chennaiyin FC, the Indian Super League team representing Chennai use the stadium as their home ground.

History

The stadium was build on the area where the old Madras Zoo was located before it was shifted to its present location at Vandalur. It was built in 1993 at a cost of ₹440 million (US$6.5 million) in 234 days. In 2012, the Government of Tamil Nadu renovated the indoor stadium at a cost of ₹120 million (US$1.8 million) with a new skating rink. In 2013, Government of Tamil Nadu upgraded the synthetic athletics track, football turf, floodlights and upgrading added a warm up track north of the stadium at a cost of ₹330.65 million (US$4.9 million).

Occupied by the Portuguese in 1503, Kochi was the first of the European colonies in colonial India. It remained the main seat of Portuguese India until 1530, when Goa was chosen instead. The city was later occupied by the Dutch and the British, with the Kingdom of Cochin becoming a princely state. Kochi ranks first in the total number of international and domestic tourist arrivals in Kerala. Kochi has been ranked the sixth best tourist destination in India according to a survey conducted by the Nielsen Company on behalf of the Outlook Traveller magazine. Kochi was one of the 28 Indian cities found to be among the emerging 440 global cities that will contribute 50% of the world GDP by the year 2025, in a 2011 study done by the McKinsey Global Institute.
