Jamuria

Jamuria is the North-Eastern neighbourhood in Asansol, in Barddhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

Jamuria is located at 23°42′N 87°05′E / 23.7°N 87.08°E / 23.7; 87.08. It has an average elevation of 111 metres (364 feet).

Asansol is composed of undulating latterite region. This area lies between two rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared.

In recent times various small and medium industries have been set up in and around the town which mainly includes small iron and cement industries.

Singaran, a small stream about 35 km long has its origin near Ikra in the Jamuria area, flows past Topsi and Andal and joins the Damodar near Waria.

Jamuria (community development block) (Bengali: জামুরিয়া সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Asansol subdivision of Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Jamuria and Pandabeswar police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Bahadurpur. Parasia, Kenda and Kunustara are urban areas in this block.

1977-2006

In the 2006 state assembly election, Dhirajlal Hazra of CPI (M) won the Jamuria assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Tapan Chakraborty of Trinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. In 2001 and 1996, Pelab Kabi of CPI (M) defeated Shiudashan Nayar of Trinamool Congress and Santosh Adhikari of Congress respectively. In 1991, 1987, 1982 and 1977, Bikash Chowdhury of CPI (M) defeated Tapas Banerjee of Congress, Biswanath Chakraborty of Congress, Pradip Bhattacharya of ICS and Chandra Sekhar of Congress in the respective years.
