Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid (also spelled Jame Mosque, Jami Masjid, Jameh Mosque, Jamia Masjid or Jomeh Mosque) refers to the main mosque of a town, city or village, and is usually the place of gathering for Eid prayers and Friday prayers. These are sometimes called Congregational mosques or Friday mosques. Many places come to be known as a Jama Masjid as a proper name. These structures are listed below.

Language and etymology

The term Jama Masjid means “Mosque of Assembly” or “Congregational Mosque” and comes from Arabic, Arabic: مسجد الجمعة ‎. Although the word "Jama" means assembly or congregation, it has been conflated with the word for Friday, the primary day of worship in Islam, and hence, originally incorrectly, but still sometimes these are called Friday Mosques, after the Jumu'ah or weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims.

In Persian, the term is Persian: مسجد جامع‎‎ masjed(-e) jāme. Jameh (جامع) stems from the root word jám (جمع) meaning "gathering", as opposed to Jom'ah (جمعه) meaning "Friday".

Jamia Mosque (Chinese: 些利街清真寺, lit. Shelley Street Mosque, or 回教清真禮拜總堂) is a mosque at Mid-levels, Hong Kong, China. The mosque is the oldest mosque in Hong Kong. The neighboring streets Mosque Street and Mosque Junction are named after this mosque.

History

The mosque was built in 1890 on a piece of land leased by the British Hong Kong government. The treaty for the land was granted on 23 December 1850. Initially, the mosque was named Mohammedan Mosque. Extension of the building took place in 1915 which made the mosque into a larger building. After World War II, the mosque was renamed Jamia Mosque.

Architecture

The mosque has a rectangular shape with an arched main entrance and Arabic-style arched windows on all sides.

Conservation

The building has been classified as a Grade I building by the Government of Hong Kong in May 2010 which are described as "outstanding merits of which every effort should be made to preserve if possible."

Jamia Mosque (Kenya)

Jamia Mosque is a mosque located on Banda Street, Nairobi, Kenya in the Central Business District. The mosque is one of Kenya's most prominent religious structures, and the most important mosque in the country. It was founded and first built by Syed Maulana Abdullah Shah between the year 1902 and 1906. He was a very pious man and up to today he is remembered every year by Muslims. The Mosque has since been extended since its original construction.

The Jamia Mosque retains a classic Arabic Muslim architectural style with extensive use of marble and inscriptions from the Quran, and the traditional row of shops (including a clinic and pharmacy) down one side to provide rental income for its upkeep. It is recognisable by its 3 silver domes, and two twin minarets. It contains a library and a training institute where one can learn Arabic, introductory computing and cloth making.
