James Wong Howe

James Wong Howe, A.S.C. (Chinese 黃宗霑; pinyin: Huáng Zōngzhān; August 28, 1899 – July 12, 1976) was a Chinese American cinematographer who worked on over 130 films. He was a master at the use of shadow and was one of the first to use deep-focus cinematography, in which both foreground and distant planes remain in focus.

During the 1930s and 1940s he was one of the most sought after cinematographers in Hollywood. He was nominated for ten Academy Awards for cinematography, winning twice for The Rose Tattoo and Hud. Howe was judged to be one of history's ten most influential cinematographers in a survey of the members of the International Cinematographers Guild.

James Wong (Chinese: 黃霑, Wong Jim; 16 March 1941 – 24 November 2004, also known as "Uncle Jim") was a Cantopop lyricist and writer based primarily in Hong Kong. Beginning from the 1960s, he was the lyricist for over 2,000 songs, collaborating with composer Joseph Koo (aka. Gu Gaa-fai) on many popular television theme songs, many of which have become classics of the genre. His work propelled Cantopop to unprecedented popularity.

He was also a well known in Asia as a columnist, actor, film director, screenwriter, and talk show hosts. He took part in creative directing positions within the entertainment industry in Hong Kong.

Wong died on 24 November 2004 of lung cancer after a four-year battle at the age of 64.

Education

Wong was born in Panyu, in what now is part of Guangzhou, China and migrated to Hong Kong with his family in 1949. He completed his secondary education at La Salle College. In 1963, he graduated from Chinese Department, Faculty of Arts of the University of Hong Kong. Wong received an MPhil degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1983 for his study in Cantonese opera (A study on the problems of Cantonese opera). In May 2003, in the midst of his fight with lung cancer, he obtained a PhD degree at the Department of Sociology, University of Hong Kong. The title of his thesis was "The rise and decline of cantopop : a study of Hong Kong popular music(1949-1997)".

James Wong (footballer)

James Wong (born 26 June 1953) is a former Malaysian footballer who is a striker for Malaysia national football team and Sabah. He also played as a goalkeeper for Malaysia youth team in 1971 Asian Youth Championship. He was known as King James by the local fans.

Wong is the first Sabahan to represent Malaysia in 1971. He played professionally for Hakoah in Australia New South Wales Premier League for two years.

Wong is well known for his physical and finishing touch. His partnership with Hassan Sani produced many memorable goal for Sabah and Malaysia. The most memorable one was in the 1980 Olympic games qualification.

In the 1980 Olympic games qualification, Malaysia won the play-off against South Korea with a 2–1 score in the Merdeka Stadium. Wong himself scored the winning goal, thanks to the assist from Hassan Sani.

However, Malaysia did not go to the Olympics as it joined the US-led boycott against the Soviet Union for the invasion of Afghanistan.

Wong appeared for the Malaysia national football team in six qualifying matches for various FIFA World Cups.
